New service centre for 36,000 international students in Perth
Released 29 November 2006
IDP Education, Australia’s largest provider of services to
international students, is opening a centre in Perth to assist the
36,000 students from overseas countries who are studying in Western
Australia.
IDP’s Perth Student Services Centre will support international
students with:
- Course counselling, applications processing and placement
- Advice on visa issues, including assistance with visa
applications and extensions
- City-orientation services
- IDP Welcome Bags for new students including free phone cards,
discount vouchers, city maps and information, pens, stationery and
useful novelties
- Free internet access for students who come to Australia with
IDP
Future services will include careers counselling and job search
assistance for IDP students.
IDP places 20,000 international students a year in Australian
universities, colleges, schools and English language courses – more
than any other organisation – using its global network of over 65
offices in nearly 30 countries. IDP is 50% owned by 38 Australian
universities and 50% owned by Australia’s largest online
recruitment and training company, SEEK Ltd.
The IDP centre is located in downtown Perth at 138 Barrack
Street, near the corner of Wellington Street and on the free city
“CAT” bus route. Students can drop in or contact the new centre
simply by dialling the free call number 1300 STUDENT (or 1300 788
3368).
The new IDP centre will support international education in WA,
which is the state’s second largest service industry bringing in
over $1 billion of export revenue to the state each year. It
creates over 5,000 permanent jobs in WA and has major economic
spin-off effects in other industries, including tourism. For
example, according to a survey by Perth Education City, 24 per cent
of parents visit their child whilst they are studying in WA and an
additional 227,000 visitor nights are accounted for by other family
and friends visiting international students.
Media are invited to attend a cocktail reception to celebrate
the opening of the IDP Perth Student Services Centre.
