Sound governance concerns the efficient management of a
country’s resources. It is important in a poverty reduction
strategy as it promotes sound development management; promoting
better government to achieve better outcomes through adherence to
the critical objectives of:
- Transparency
- Accountability
- Strategic focus
- Efficiency and effectiveness
- Participation.
The development of a sound governance system is also crucial to
economic growth, building a relationship between politics,
institutions and collective action that makes government work for
poor people. Themes within governance include public
financial management and accountability which is central to
governments’ ability to deliver services to their citizens; the
equitable and universal provision of effective basic services
affordable to clients and the public purse; the building of
effective justice systems enabling an environment for economic
development; supporting models of decentralization that promote
civil society activity which, if local authorities have the powers
and resources to respond, enhances the legitimacy of
government.
