Merit-based scholarshipsMost merit-based scholarships are based on different criteria including achievements in academics, arts, sports, or other hobbies. These scholarships can be offered by various organisations including federal and state governments, large companies, businesses, and professional or educational institutions. However, typically this type of scholarship has its own criteria that need to be met.
Scholarships offered by the governmentMany local and national governments offer full and half scholarships for outstanding students. These students enjoy numerous benefits including the all-important exemption from payment of tuition fees. Government scholarships typically can range from three, six, and nine months and may have mandatory criteria such as educational qualifications, age, knowledge of certain language and more.
Scholarships offered by educational institutionsMany universities and colleges also offer scholarships typically for students who have achieved academic excellence. In some cases, university scholarships can cover tuition fees, living expenses, travel, and insurance.
Sports scholarshipsIf you have a passion for a sport and that sport is offered at your institution, you can apply for a sports scholarship offered by many schools and private organisations. It is best to ask your coach or manager about these scholarship opportunities.
Need-based scholarships (grants)Grants can sometimes eliminate the need for students to pay back their tuition fees due to personal, family or financial circumstances. This can be determined through evaluation of the person and their surroundings. Check with your local or national government for education grants that may be available to you.
Student loansYou can also opt to take a student loan to help finance your study abroad. Many governments and private banks offer affordable student loans that you can apply for before your travels.
