Occupation Ceilings ( 2017-2018 ) was released on last Thursday, 3 August, a month after this FY started. The ceilings for this FY can be summarized as follows:
- The number for Accountants ( general ) was almost doubled and it is now 4785, while in last financial year it was 2500. But the total number for auditors ( company secretaries, corporate treasurers ) was slightly reduced and it is now 1327, while for last FY it was 2212. This makes it possible for some graduates living in big cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and having 70 points to get invitations to apply for the PR ( 189 visa ). For a long time, none of the accountants with 70 points gets invitation.
- In engineering, the total number of Civil Engineering Professionals is 3296, this is a 51% increase compared with last FY; for Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers, the total number is 2178, 42% increase over last FY; Electrical Engineers is slightly reduced and it is now 1042; for Electronic Engineers, Telecommunication Engineering Professionals and Other Engineering Professionals, the numbers remain the same and they are all 1000. So engineering continues to be a safe study area, if the students have the capacity to study them.
- In IT, the numbers for ICT Business and Systems Analysts and Software and Applications Programmers are 1574 and 6202 respectively, there is a small increase compared with last FY; the number for Computer Network Professionals is slightly cut and it is now 1318; IT will always be a popular study area and it will remain competitive to secure invitation, graduates would need at least 65 points.
- For other occupations that are of concern for international students, the demand for Registered Nurses, Social Workers, Early Childhood Teachers and Secondary School Teachers remains very strong, they are relatively safe, students can be recommended to study in these areas if you think they are suitable, and just be mindful of the English requirements for entry into the courses and for future skill assessments.
Last week when the occupation ceilings were released, there were a few errors on the website; for one the occupation group for ICT security specialist was missing from the list. The DIBP has since updated its website and it's now all fixed. Occupation group 2621 - Database and systems administrators and ICT security specialists have a relatively generous upper quota of 2391. Invitations to date has also been updated. More information can be found from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website.
