Ways to balance extracurricular activities and education

Studying abroad in Australia can offer a unique experience with numerous opportunities to enjoy extracurricular activities alongside your education. As an international student, it is important that you understand the importance of balancing your schedule to give yourself the best chance of enjoying what this experience has to offer. One thing you should try and remember is that a balance of academics and extracurricular activities is an important ingredient for a successful university experience.

Study comes first

While taking the time to relax and have fun are important, you need to make sure you always put your education first. Create a schedule where your studies, exams, assignments, projects or other academic responsibilities are given priority. After all, the primary reason that you are studying abroad is to participate in classes and experience Australian university life. Also, keep in mind that you are not just there to ace tests and get high grades. You are there to learn and understand the material and to learn how to apply it later in your life.

Carefully plan what needs to be done first for your academics and plot out your extracurricular activities next. Make sure all your important tasks take priority. For example, when creating a schedule try and plan around your classes and study time. In short, attempt to avoid activities that may detract from your studies.

Prioritise your time

Joining extracurricular activities is not only fun, but also a great way to improve learning and avoid stress. However, keep in mind that you should try and be picky about the activities you join to avoid draining your time and energy. Don’t join every organisation or club that your university has to offer. Instead, you could invest your time in activities that truly interest you or will help you with your experience. Australian universities have plenty of extracurricular activities to offer their students. Pick two or three hobbies that interest you the most and try to commit to them for the whole season.

Try to multi-task

It’s a good idea to choose activities that will further your learning at the same time. For example, some extracurricular activities can improve your network or help you meet people who may be good contacts to have after you complete your studies. Prioritise hobbies that will give you a break from your studies, while also helping you out in the long run.

Learning how to manage your time wisely is a skill that involves practice. Studying abroad can be a great opportunity for you to learn new things, meet new people, learn a new culture, and advance your education. Balancing your time between academics and extracurricular activities will give you the best chance to do that.
