Tips when trying to keep your personal belongings safe abroad

Studying and living abroad is one of the most exciting journeys that you could ever take. While it is usually a smooth and enjoyable process to enjoy a study adventure in another country, it is also important to consider your safety and the safety of your belongings. Even though Australia is known as one of the safest countries in the world, there are dangers that you should be aware of anywhere you travel. Here are some tips on how to keep your valuables safe while you study abroad!

Keep your valuables protected

This is especially important if you have plenty of electronic gadgets like laptops, mobile devices, and digital cameras. Be aware that damage to your gadgets while you are abroad can be more problematic compared with when you are in your home country. Never take chances and invest in sturdy, secure, and (if possible) waterproof cases for all your items. Keep in mind Australia is known for its unpredictable weather and some forward planning can keep your valuables from being exposed to extreme temperatures, spills, and breakage from falls. If you get the chance to enjoy a weekend away, make sure you find a new safe spot to keep your belongings locked and safe at all times.

Hide your valuables the right way

In many countries thieves prey on students because they are known to carry around expensive electronic gadgets. This is hard to avoid, as electronic gadgets are part of everyday study life. You will be able to decrease the chances of losing your items when you know how to secure your valuables correctly. Remember, if thieves cannot find it, they will not be able to steal it. Tuck your important gadgets into your bag as deep as you can, and avoid bringing them along to places where you don’t need them (e.g. avoid bringing your laptop to the beach). Another good tip is to avoid walking around with a lot of cash and instead apply for a credit or debit card.

Lock away your valuables

Even if you know most of the people in your dormitory, hotel, or hostel, you should consider getting a special locker where you stash away your important items. Lockers are inexpensive and you can conveniently keep your important stuff like your laptop, cash, or jewellery securely locked away. To avoid losing a key or having that key taken, perhaps try a combination lock to keep your items safe at all times.

Get insurance

Sometimes you will be unable to prevent theft or damage even when you take preventative measures. Apply for insurance for your valuables to help you in the unlikely event that you lose your items. There are travel insurances that cover theft and damage while you are abroad, so take the time to enquire about which ones are best for you.
