Top 5 Multi-day Hiking Trails in Australia 

Australia is a popular study destination for students from all around the world. It also has a lot to offer in the way of natural beauty and adventure. Australia is considered to be one of the most exciting travel destinations in the world, with diverse environments ranging from deserts, plateaus, ranges, vast deserts, and islands. Australia has plenty to offer the keen adventurer. 

International students who love outdoor activities must take the opportunity to enjoy multi-day trekking in Australia, with friends or family. Clubs and organizations put together all kinds of trekking trips, so you are bound to find one that suits your needs. These treks are a great way to escape the hustle-and-bustle of city life and meet some new people whilst exploring Australia’s great outdoors.

 

1. Thorsborne Trail, Queensland    

Named after Australian conservationist, Arthur Thorsborne, this 32-kilometre trail is on Hinchinbrook Island National Park, located 8 kilometres off Cardwell in North Queensland.  The trail winds up from Nina Bay in the north or from George Point in the south. Hikers can expect beaches with golden sand, lush rainforests, bubbling creeks, and rocky headlands. There are seven campsites along the trail, six of which are right near the beach. The Mulligan Falls campsite is also attractive to tourists as it is situated under the cover of a lush rainforest. 

Note: Only 40 people are allowed on this hike, so it is best to book in advance. The trek is especially popular during the cooler, drier months of May – October, the perfect time for hiking.

Distance: 32 km

Difficulty: Moderate

Length: 4–5 days

 

2. Larapinta Trail, Northern Territory

If you are up for an iconic and picturesque trail experience, head out to the Northern Territory’s, Larapinta Trail. There is the option to join a guided group where you can stay in tents or  you can trek independently depending on the kind of adventure you want to experience. Larapinta Trail is known as one of the best arid-zone long distance walking trails and you can camp anywhere along the trail. The trail showcases the harsh beauty of the West MacDonnell Ranges. 

Location: West MacDonnell Range, Northern Territory

Distance: 223 km

Difficulty: Hard

Length: 16–20 days (including rest days)

 

3. Cape to Cape Track, Western Australia

The Cape to Cape Track was created in 2001 as a long distance walking trail in the far southwest of WA. The start and finish points are the iconic lighthouses right at the tips of Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. The track offers different types of surfaces and terrains, varying from smooth wide tracks, to narrow rocky paths. It also has sandy beaches along the trail for hikers to enjoy. There are several campsites and caravan parks where you can rest. 

Location: Southwest Western Australia

Distance: 135 km

Difficulty: Easy

Length: 6–8 days

 

4. Australian Alps Walking Track, Victoria/New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory

This track starts at Walhalla, Victoria and runs to Tharwa, ACT, near Canberra. The track takes hikers through several national parks including the Kosciuszko National Park and the Alpine National Park. It also ascends a number of peaks such as Mount Kosciuszko, Mount Bogong, and Bimberi Peak. Along the way, you will get to enjoy majestic forests, alpine headlands, and snowy woodlands. 

Location: High Country of ACT, NSW, and Victoria

Distance: 655 km

Difficulty: Hard

Length: 45–60 days (including rest days)

 

5. Fraser Island Great Walk, Queensland

Fraser Island is renowned for its incredible, natural beauty, and for being the largest sand island in the world. It is also a World Heritage-protected area. Enjoy beautiful mangrove forest, crystal-clear freshwater lakes, and multi-coloured sand. 

Location: Queensland

Distance: 84 km

Difficulty: Easy

Length: 5–7 days
