Hobart is a small city with a population of about 220,000, and is the southernmost capital city in Australia. There are four University of Tasmania campuses in Hobart, each offering specialty courses and training. Hobart is home to Australia’s oldest high school and second oldest university. 

Weather 

Located on the southern coast of Tasmania, Hobart’s climate is cool most of the year round, with Mount Wellington in Hobart getting snowfall during the winter months. Average temperatures during the summer months (December – February) range from 11.5°C – 21°C. Autumn (March – May) is typically anywhere between 8.9°C – 17.3°C. Winter (June – August) is the coldest, with the southern winds from Antarctica dropping the average temperature anywhere from 5°C – 12.3°C. Lastly, during spring, average temperatures range from 7.8°C – 16.9°C.

The University of Tasmania

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is the State’s university. Its four Hobart campuses offer a variety of program choices. UTAS has a considerable number of international students; as many as one in five UTAS enrolments are from overseas. UTAS boasts excellent teaching and training facilities. It is a consistently top performing tertiary institution in Australia and is ranked in the top 300 in the world by the Academic Rankings of World Universities.

Living in Hobart

Students from the University of Tasmania love the laid back feel that Hobart offers. While it is a small city, Hobart has many businesses and companies that offer jobs that fit in with university timetables. Many students live close to the main campus and among the trees and bushland of Sandy Bay. Here you can enjoy views of the city of Hobart, the Derwent River and the impressive backdrop of Hobart's Mount Wellington. The Sandy Bay UTAS Campus is just a 30-minute walk from Hobart’s city and a 15-minute walk to Sandy Bay, which is serviced by regular metropolitan buses.

There are numerous student accommodation options in Hobart. Because Hobart doesn’t have 24-hour public transport, many students live together in shared houses or apartments. Nearly everything is within walking distance. 

Tasmania’s rich natural beauty and old Victorian charm is magical. It’s a place of natural wonders, unique animals, plants, flowers and diverse sea life.
