Australian banking made easy with CommBank
This year we have partnered with Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank), the leading provider1 of student banking services in Australia to bring you a bank account with no monthly account fee for the duration of your studies.
By opening a Smart Access Everyday Account with CommBank, you can access your funds via a variety of methods to suit your convenience; including on your mobile with the CommBank app, using NetBank (CommBank’s online banking platform), or in person at over 950 bank branches, 13 of these are located on university campuses.
Opening a CommBank account before you depart to Australia
If you haven’t already, open a Smart Access Everyday Account online before coming to Australia to save time and hassle. All you need to do is go to www.commbank.com.au/idp and complete the account opening questions. Your bank account will be up and running in less than 10 minutes.
Once your account is open, you can transfer funds to your new account ahead of time so that it is ready for your arrival in Australia. Please note that you will only be able to withdraw those funds once you complete the identification process at a CommBank branch.
To benefit from an IDP dedicated branch services, please choose the following branches as part of your account opening process, depending on your IDP office in Australia.

Identifying yourself in branch upon arrival
When you arrive in Australia, you will need to visit a CommBank branch to identify yourself in order to fully activate your account. It is important that CommBank speak to you in person to check your ID. Please bring your passport, letter of enrolment or your student card with you and an Australian mobile number, if you have one. At this time we will also order your Debit Mastercard® so that you can access your money at an ATM, shop online or in stores.
While you wait for the card to arrive, you will be able to use your mobile to withdraw cash from an ATM using the ‘Cardless Cash’1 functionality available on the CommBank app.
