At IDP, we wanted to find out what problems and challenges potential and current international students were facing. The ‘emerging futures’ questionnaire asked international students for their opinions and thoughts on a variety of subjects. We asked 6,000 students across 114 countries all about their experiences, motivations, perceptions, and priorities for their international students.

There are a number of challenges that international students face that education and migration agents should be aware of and address if possible. Students wishing to study overseas need to be aware of what they may face, and how they’ll manage, or how it will affect their future choices.

Three big problems emerged as the top pain points.

1. High Cost of Tuition

For most students, the high cost of tuition is part of their decision making regarding international study. For 49% of people, the cost of tuition had become so high that studying was no longer affordable. While investing in your education does often help to secure a stable and rewarding future, the amount of money required is simply beyond the family’s resources.

AT IDP, we can help by assisting you with finding and applying for scholarships to reduce the financial burden. There are scholarships available in your home country, your intended destination country, and your institution. We know what’s available and can help you make decisions about which scholarships are most attainable for you.

Also, each university has different fee structures, and some are more expensive than others. Australia institutions can offer great value for money, especially in regional areas. We can help find more cost effective options that still provide an exceptional education.

2. High Cost of Living

The entire world is experiencing increased cost of living and inflation, and some countries are experiencing more problems than others. 35% of people who decided not to study overseas attributed that to the cost-of-living increase.

We can provide you with options to study in regional Australia, where cost of living is lower, and there are often scholarships to help cover costs. We can help you set up in a new city through IDP’s student essential services which can help you to find the most pocket-friendly services. We offer personalized support to help students navigate their study journey in Australia; we know that everyone is different, and we have the knowledge and resources to create a personalised set of options.

3. Difficulty in Gaining a Student Visa

Getting a student visa is stressful and can be fraught with problems. It’s a complex and often challenging process, with lots of requirements and paperwork. For 29% of international study applicants, they see the process as too difficult and they decide not to study overseas as a result.
