- One of the greatest discoveries in human health is credited to a University of Adelaide graduate - world-renowned pathologist and Nobel Prize winner, Sir Howard Florey. Florey assisted in the discovery of penicillin in 1941, which is estimated to have saved over 200 million lives worldwide.
- The University of Adelaide was the first Australian institution to offer science degrees, introducing the subject into the curriculum in 1882.

Teaching and Research Specialisations/Strengths
- The University of Adelaide was rated 5 stars in the 2012 Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) assessment in the fields of Physical Sciences and Medical Health Sciences. Specialist research areas in these fields include Medicinal and Biological chemistry, Particle and Nuclear Physics, molecular genetics, cancer, psychology and neuroscience.
- The Faculty of Engineering is home to the internationally recognised Australian School of Petroleum (ASP), one of the few institutions in the world that undertakes petroleum-based research and education. The ASP is a world-class research facility that specialises in three key areas: petroleum engineering, petroleum geoscience and petroleum management.
- The University of Adelaide Law School has a strong reputation for quality teaching and research at both a national and international level. Areas of research specialisation include bankruptcy and insolvency law, litigation law and work and employment regulation. The university’s law school has also produced many prominent Australian politicians including former Democrat leader, Natasha Stott-Despoja and former Minister for Immigration, Amanda Vanstone.
- Research undertaken within the Arts faculty was rated at above world standard in the 2012 ERA assessment. The university’s Arts faculty, focused on delivering community solutions on both a local and global scale, comprises several acclaimed research institutes and centres including the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre, Australian Workplace Innovation and Social Research Centre, and the Fay Gale Centre for Research on Gender.
