Established in 1965 as Algoma College, Algoma University was initially an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury. In 1967, Algoma College began offering classes in portable building located at the Cambrian College site, now Sault College site. The college moved into its current location, the former Shingwauk Residential School building, in 1971. In 2008, Algoma University was granted its charter and with the charter, achieved full autonomous university status as Ontario?s 19th University. Algoma University now offers over 30 academic programs in a diverse range of fields and through three faculties i.e. Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities.
The university may be small, but Algoma U has the most diverse campus in all of Ontario. The campus is enriched by international students from over 30 different countries, who make up 27 percent of its student body. The university pride itself on providing international students with the best learning environment, called as the Algoma Advantage offering small class sizes, one-on-one interactions with their dedicated faculty, endless support services, great research opportunities, and plenty of chances to get involved inside and outside of the classroom.
Algoma U?s main campus is located in Sault Ste. Marie, a city of 73,000 people in Northern Ontario. ?The Soo?, as locals call it, has all the amenities of a big city such as shopping, entertainment, sports teams, festivals, and cultural activities, but without the hassle of traffic. New and exciting things are happening in Brampton as Algoma University expands both its programming and campus student space. Brampton, a lively city in the Greater Toronto Area that is home to over 600,000 residents, is the 9th largest city in Canada. Timmins campus offers diploma-to-degree and university transfer students? opportunities to accelerate their paths to successful careers. Located on the Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology campus, the blended-learning programming is placed in a northern context, perfect for those living and working in Northern Ontario.
