About University of Hull

The University of Hull was founded in 1927 – originally as University College Hull. The foundation stone was laid the following year by the Duke of York (later King George VI, of The King's Speech fame) and was opened for business with 39 students and 14 ‘one-man’ departments. It has come a long way since then and now has more than 16,000 students and around 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 academic staff. As England’s 14th-oldest university, it has a proud heritage of academic excellence, and a history of creating and inspiring life-changing research.

The University has particular research expertise in social justice, environmental technologies and maritime history. Faculty and students work in healthcare, 3D visualization and nanotechnology is also widely respected. In research terms, university is best known for developing liquid-crystal technology and this breakthrough, it has received the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement. In the 2014 national Research Excellence Framework (REF), 62% of the university’s research was judged to be internationally excellent.

Creativity lives and breathes at the University of Hull. It’s central to what universities do. But at Hull, there is passionate support for the arts and culture – whether that's on campus or in the wider city. Because of this, the university is ecstatic to be a principal partner of Hull UK City of Culture. Every four years, the UK City of Culture title passes to a different British city.

With more than 50 clubs to choose from, the Athletic Union is a key part of the Hull experience. Alongside the actual sport, there’s a calendar of lively social events. The university also compete in an annual varsity, taking on rival institutions' sports teams.

Hull's Brynmor Jones Library is one of the finest of its kind in the country. It’s a state-of-the-art facility with flexible spaces for silent study, innovative teaching and group projects. Beside this, there are more than 1,100 open-access computers and 1,600 study spaces around the University for Students to use. The university has its very own £3.6-million club, Asylum, right here on campus and is run by their students’ union. Asylum is a well-known club nights. There are numerous religious student societies and places to practice faith on campus and in Hull.

The University of Hull campus is about halfway between London and Edinburgh which puts it within pretty convenient distance of most parts of the UK. Hull's road, rail, air and sea links are so good that students can easily get to the university from all over the country, and in fact from all over the world.
