Overview

The University of Leeds is ranked 15th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021, and among the world top 100 according to the QS World University Rankings 2021. It is also part of the prestigious Russell Group - a collection of 24 research intensive universities in the UK.

The University also ranks 3rd in the UK in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, 2018.

Campus facilities were rated second best in the UK according to the same survey, reinforced by the fact that the university has invested over GBP 120 million in two new buildings in recent years alone. The Sir William Henry Bragg Building was completed in summer 2021, and houses new engineering and physical sciences facilities, and the well-stocked, modern, Laidlaw Library is the newest addition to the university's suite of five libraries.

Sport facilities at the institution are world-class, with the Edge, a state-of-the-art fitness complex, holding a 25m swimming pool, sauna, steam room, climbing wall and a number of sports halls which are used for a variety of different activities.

The university takes great pride in providing a multicultural campus for its students and welcomes those from overseas. In fact, more than 12,000 international students come from over 170 different countries around the world to study at the University of Leeds.

Leeds University Students' Union (LUU) is one of the most active in the UK. It was the first in the UK to be awarded an ‘Excellent' status by the National Union of Students, and offers over 300 clubs and societies for students to get involved in.

What's new

What's new

At Leeds, students are challenged to explore, question and discover. Prospective postgraduate students have the opportunity to get a taste of what's on offer by attending one of the Virtual Open Days.

The university is putting on a week of exciting live seminars, aimed specifically at those wishing to enrol on Masters or research degree programmes. This series of interesting and insightful discussions will shed some light on the structure of the Leeds postgraduate network, and the world-renowned qualifications which are offered.

The Virtual Open Days run from 29 November – 3 December, and cover many topics ranging from course-specific sessions to talks about life in Leeds, application procedures, and funding opportunities through the university's many scholarship programmes. Sessions are curated and delivered by Leeds' expert academic faculty, and are a fantastic opportunity to learn about how to specialise in a particular area of study and build a fulfilling and impactful career.

Participants can also experience the Leeds campus online, through a 360 virtual tour which is an immersive introduction to the university's impressive location and facilities, including academic departments and postgraduate accommodation.

Prospective students can register interest online, and discover why Leeds is a world top 100 university (QS World Rankings 2022), which offers a fantastic place to embark on postgraduate study and an unforgettable life experience.

Teaching quality

Students at the University of Leeds are trained to become independent critical and analytical thinkers. They will also learn to become self-motivated learners who know how to define problems and seek solutions.

Teaching consists of a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, with time also allocated for private study, project work and laboratory work. As a member of the Russell Group, research is at the heart of all learning on campus. Students can expect to learn about discoveries and breakthroughs, sometimes even before they have been published, by active researchers who disseminate and incorporate these findings within their teaching.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Undergraduate

The university recognises a wide range of international qualifications. Some degrees require prior study of particular subjects, especially within the sciences, engineering and languages. All students must also demonstrate suitable proficiency in the English Language. Students who do not meet the required academic requirements for direct entry may want to consider one of the foundation year options.

Postgraduate

For the taught master's programmes, students will normally be required to have obtained a first-degree equivalent to a 2:1 degree in the UK. The university also considers evidence of relevant personal, professional and educational experience for some of the postgraduate programmes. Students must also meet the university's English Language requirements.

Research

The university normally requires students to hold a first-class or second-class honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in a subject relevant to their proposed field of research. Students must also meet the university's English Language requirements.

Cancer Biology and Therapy course

BSc 1st class or 2i, or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline which would normally be one of the biological sciences but a natural sciences graduate will be considered.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

The University of Leeds offers a number of attractive scholarships for international students, ranging from partial fee awards maintenance grants and other allowances. Scholarships are awarded at both university-level and school-level and it is recommended that students make enquiries and apply as soon as possible for these. Students often need an offer of a place before they are eligible to apply for scholarships.

Scholarships available include, but are not limited to, the following:

Undergraduate scholarships

Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences International Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship

This grants up to GBP 6,000 for the duration of the course, up to a maximum of four years subject to satisfactory progression.

Biological Sciences Dean's International Achievement Scholarship

This grants GBP 5,000 per year up to a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory progression.

School of Psychology Excellence Scholarship

This grants GBP 10,000 subject to academic merit.

School of Law International Scholarship

This grants GBP 2,500 tuition fee reduction. This is for year one only, there is a scholarship available in years two and three subject to academic achievement.

Postgraduate scholarships

The university offers a range of postgraduate funding for both master's and research students. These awards vary in value and are offered on a subject-by-subject basis.

Facilities

Facilities

The University of Leeds is committed to providing, maintaining and upgrading the best possible facilities to support students in their studies.

Libraries

The university's five libraries are open through the week during term time and cater to a variety of student needs. Students can access all the books and online materials they need for their course, along with an amazing collection of rare books and manuscripts that can be used for individual and group research. The libraries also offer rooms for group work, with interactive presentation equipment.

IT Support

Students also have access to more than 1,800 personal computers across the university's computer labs, most of which are open round the clock. Other features of IT support include free, high-speed Wi-Fi, a range of free or reduced cost software, and secure access to resources with the Desktop Anywhere service. The National Student Survey consistently ranks the university highly for access to IT resources.

Language Centre

The specialist Language Centre helps students learn and master new languages, with a stock of learning materials in more than 45 languages. Students have access to an extensive collection of foreign films and documentaries and more than 50 TV channels in over 20 languages. International students can prepare for study in the UK with the university's pre-sessional English language courses, which are available before the course start date. Once they've started their degree, they can get academic English language development through part-time classes and workshops alongside their studies.

A degree from the University of Leeds will provide students with the edge they seek to pursue the career of their choice. The university's Career Centre, which offers a daily drop-in service and grants one-to-one appointments, helps students find and apply for jobs, along with offering access to events and exclusive job opportunities. The Centre helps students work out effective employment strategies which will put them one step ahead in a competitive job market.

Leeds graduates are highly sought after by leading employers, including Accenture, IBM, Jaguar Land Rover, Unilever and many others who regularly visit the campus for the purposes of recruitment.

Postgraduate study

Those who go onto postgraduate study will join a community of over 10,000 students, possibly working alongside internationally recognised research teams. University of Leeds graduates may be eligible to receive a 10% bursary towards their postgraduate fees.

Alumni

University of Leeds supports students even after they graduate. The university's global network of alumni includes close to 270,000 people spread all over the world, providing students with lifelong careers advice from a wide network. Additionally, alumni will also have use of libraries and access to the university's Union facilities for up to five years after they graduate.
