Connected Systems Institute

A recent addition to the university's campus, The Connected Systems Institute conducts ground-breaking and advanced research using state-of-the-art facilities. Lubar Entrepreneurship Center

The Lubar Entrepreneurship Center helps talented students develop ideas, become industry change-makers, and make a difference in society. Led by expert instructors, students learn and develop skills on courses, workshops, and networking events, which enhance their graduate job prospects. The centre encourages a collaborative working environment.

UWM's Partners for Health initiative is a collaboration between the College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, and the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. The programs at these colleges prepare students through interprofessional education that emulates real healthcare environments. Alongside faculty, students conduct innovative research to improve the lives of people who have physical and mental health issues.

The UWM School of Freshwater Sciences is the nation's only graduate school dedicated solely to the study of freshwater. It equips future scientists, researchers, and policymakers with the necessary interdisciplinary skills and expertise required to address critical challenges and find solutions to preserve this vital natural resource. The School of Freshwater Sciences also offers an undergraduate program.

The university requires the requisite level of English proficiency from all applicants. Prospective international students can provide proof of English proficiency before their enrollment in one of the following ways:

• An approved test score that meets the requirements for regular or conditional admission or
• University study: Proof of completion of at least 18 months of full-time, for-credit academic study (approximately three semesters) at a recognized or accredited institution of higher education that teaches in English or
• Secondary/high school study: Proof of completion of the last two years of secondary/high school at an institution whose language of instruction is English.

Students who do not meet the score requirement for regular admission will receive ‘regular admission with English placement'. This will require the applicant to undertake English for Academic Purposes coursework alongside their degree program.

Students who are conditionally admitted based on their English proficiency level must enroll in UWM's English Language Academy Intensive English Program and reach the necessary English language proficiency before beginning their academic studies.

A degree from UWM opens up a world of opportunity, with 63 percent of UWM graduates securing employment before graduation, and 91 percent saying the institution prepared them for their career (2017-18 survey of UWM graduates). International students have interned or graduated to work at prestigious companies including GE Healthcare Microsoft Johnson Controls Rockwell Automation Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Amazon.

The university's Career Planning and Resource Center works directly with students and collaborates with UWM faculty/staff to develop resources and experiences that connect career opportunities with academics and student life. The center also partners with employers and others to provide students/alumni with rewarding opportunities, internships, jobs, and career-related education.

UWM students have incredible opportunities for cooperative experiences and internships. Undergraduates can receive paid positions as research assistants through UWM's Office of Undergraduate Research.

The university's impressive alumni network of more than 195,000 graduates provides strong career connections for graduates. Milwaukee was recently named the second-best city in the United States to launch a career (LinkedIn's Economic Graph Team), and 71 percent of UWM alumni choose to live and work in Wisconsin

Scholarships

UWM has a scholarship program for newly admitted international undergraduate students. Scholarship award decisions are based on academic merit and the diversity of the candidate (i.e. how the candidate contributes to the diversity of UWM).

The scholarship awards may be up to USD 5,000 per academic year (USD 2,500 per semester) and may be renewed each year (for a maximum of four years total).

There are four types of graduate student assistantships. These are teaching assistants project assistants program assistants, and research assistants. Assistantships offer tuition remission, health coverage, and a monthly allowance.

Tuition and living costs

Tuition costs vary between programs, but undergraduate students can expect to pay approximately USD 21,200 per year. Graduate students can expect to pay about USD 25,300 annually.

The student living costs in Milwaukee are significantly less than in coastal cities such as Boston and Los Angeles. On a nine-month/academic year basis, September to May, student expenses are approximately USD 12,000.
