Institute of Technology Carlow

Ireland
Overview

Overview

The Institute of Technology Carlow (IT Carlow) is where learners are focused on reaching new heights. It is one of Ireland's largest technological institutions, based on campuses across Carlow, Wicklow and Wexford.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020, the institute is dedicated to equipping students with the tools they need to stand out in the graduate job market. International students can choose from a range of innovative career-centred programmes where they can study for an undergraduate, postgraduate or foundation qualification.

IT Carlow provides a large host of services and facilities, from academic support to recreational amenities. There are many clubs and societies to be part of, and the institution is well-known for its excellence in competitive sport.

The main campus is based in Carlow, South East Ireland. It's 85km from Dublin, 92km from Rosslare Europort, and 97km from Dublin Airport. The local area boasts quintessential Irish countryside, with mountain trails, forests and ancient monastic sites.

Students can walk into Carlow town, in which they'll enjoy comfortable student housing, bars, restaurants, shopping amenities and an exciting nightlife. The town offers a friendly community with a population of 24,000, where international students feel safe and welcome. It's also where many international businesses have bases, meaning work experiences and job opportunities are easy to find.

Home to over 9,000 students, IT Carlow offers an inclusive campus environment where students make lifelong friends while reaching academic goals. It's the start of an exciting journey for those looking to pursue successful careers in business, law, humanities, science, sport or engineering.

IT Carlow recognised for gender equality in academia

2019 saw the Institute of Technology Carlow awarded the Bronze Athena SWAN Award. This was from Advance HE, which recognised the institute's work in advancing diversity and inclusion of students and staff. Only two Institutes of Technology were recognised for this.

The Athena SWAN Charter is an accreditation scheme that assesses how higher education institutions address gender inequality. President of IT Carlow, Dr Patricia Mulcahy, said, ''This is a highly significant achievement, placing the institute amongst the first in the Technological Sector to achieve this award, and amongst the first in the higher education sector to achieve the award under the expanded Athena SWAN Charter. Achieving this award under the expanded charter is particularly noteworthy as it recognises a commitment across the institute to addressing gender equality challenges in higher education more broadly, including, but not limited to, those experienced by women.''
