His purchase of 40 acres just south of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art became the UMKC Volker campus. The small group of 260 students who began classes at the University of Kansas City (UKC) on Oct. 1, 1933 paved the way for the more than 126,000 graduates who have joined its alumni ranks.
