Canberra is Australia’s capital city. It is a beautiful city set around the magnificent Lake Burley Griffin. A safe and multicultural city, Canberra is also known by its official name of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
The Canberra region is respected throughout the world for its concentration of educational and academic institutions. The Australian National University regularly ranked as the country’s best university and among the top 20 in the world and the University of Canberra, whose graduates are among the nations most employable and best paid, are located in Canberra.
Canberra Government’s 85 public schools offer high quality learning in modern, well-equipped and supportive environments. Our schools have developed a range of programs specifically to meet the needs of international students with the ability to tailor the programs for individuals. International students are made particularly welcome, with high quality Government education in a safe, friendly and multicultural city.
The Year 11 and 12 college system in Canberra offers international students a unique experience. With the two senior years separate from the high school, a very serious learning environment is available for young adults with a focus on preparing them for further study after they graduate from college. The continuous assessment system particularly benefits international students, as there is no major external examination to sit at the end of year 12. Canberra also has a strong focus on meeting the needs of gifted and talented students and offers a wide curriculum choice to suit the intellect, interest and capability of every student. Programs with the Australian National University (ANU) and the International Baccalaureate program (IB) are on offer.
Government schooling in Canberra is leading the way in preparing young people for the opportunities and challenges of life in the 21st century. With one of the best government education systems in the country, government school students consistently rate as the best educated in Australia and among the brightest in the world. An international education in Canberra sets students apart from their peers and creates pathways to success in whatever direction they choose.
The ACT Government Education and Training Directorate accept responsibility for the welfare for students under the age of 18 who are not cared for by a parent in Australia. Homestay accommodation for international students over 15 years old is provided. Students are placed with Canberra families - a wonderful way for students to experience Australian culture and improve their English.
International students in Canberra government schools receive a high level of care. Each school has an International Private Student (IPS) coordinator and the ACT Government Education and Training Directorate provides a dedicated pastoral care officer and homestay coordinator who monitor student’s attendance, progress, health and wellbeing. Officers from the International Education Unit are on 24 hour emergency call to assist international students.
As a smaller city, Canberra is safe and able to offer a personalised service to international students in a unique environment.
Fees and Charges
Tuition and Administrative Fees for Mainstream Schooling – 571 Student Visa Holders (based on one academic year)
The following fees and charges are for students studying in Canberra Government Schools on a 571 student visa subclass.

* This fee covers school tuition plus Parental Voluntary Contribution, textbook hire and consumable
charges. It does not include the cost of materials used by students to make items which they take away
from school, non-curriculum excursion costs, and the support and service fees that may be incurred by
students with special needs.
