Opening in January 2022, the Institute of Sport will bring world-leading researchers from across the university together. The new facilities will complement existing specialist sports and coaching provision at Platt Lane Sports Complex in Fallowfield, South Manchester. It will provide space for teaching, research, offices and learning spaces. It will also offer specialist hi-tech research labs including an imaging suite with an MRI scanner, a suite for bone density analysis, an altitude and heat chamber to simulate climate conditions, and a muscle function lab.

New Science and Engineering building

The new Science and Engineering building will provide new and improved study areas and catering facilities, as well as enhanced teaching spaces for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The development site forms part of our existing campus and is due for completion in 2024.

Some of Manchester Metropolitan’s facilities include:

  • The University library, open 24 hours a day from September to June, has study zones with over one million books, journals and e-resources.
  • Over 4,000 PCs across campus
  • A full-sized mock courtroom, providing students with essential practical skills for a career in law
  • A Fashion Studio that is used for the production of garments from design through to development and manufacturing. The studio is equipped with CAD software, specialised sewing and joining machines and laser cutting equipment.
  • A multimedia studio that has high definition vision mixing, HD cameras, full audio, video recording facilities and a computer usability lab which captures and analyses human behaviour. There is also an animation suite, dedicated green screen room, lighting rigs and motion capture equipment.
  • Social areas that students can use to relax in, including the Students’ Union Main Hall, Students’ Union Café and Shop, Brooks Building Café, Strength and Conditioning Gym, Business School Atrium, Brooks Building Atrium, and many more.

Students’ Union

The Manchester Metropolitan University Union represents the rights and interests of all of its students.

All Manchester Metropolitan students automatically become members of the Students’ Union and enjoy access to a range of sports clubs, student societies, support services and facilities. With over 120 different sports clubs and societies, there’s something for everyone.

The Students’ Union is led by student officers elected by students. This ensures that they listen to the needs and views of all, helping students get the most out of their time at university. Manchester Metropolitan’s Students’ Union building is the place to socialise, work and relax. It has a café, shop and event space, social seating areas, meeting rooms and quiet study spaces.

Experienced, trained staff in the Advice Centre offer free specialist, student-centred advice on a whole range of subjects such as funding and personal finance, academic issues and accommodation. They help thousands of students with a wide range of issues.

Arrival support

International students receive arrival support with pre-departure webinars, a free airport pickup and a week of welcome events.

Pastoral support

Once at their accommodation, the Residential Life team have Residential Advisors providing students assistance through advice and support.

Having welcomed international students for many years, the university has developed several specialist teams to provide them with the right support throughout their studies:

  • Student Hub support staff can provide advice and support on student living, careers, studying and finance, immigration, and welfare.
  • The Immigration and Welfare team also provide confidential advice and guidance as well as organising regular workshops to help with renewing student visas.

The university Counselling Service allows students to talk to a professionally-qualified counsellor, about any personal problems and the team also runs workshops and courses.
