Michigan Technological University started as the Michigan Mining School in 1885, with a mission to train mining engineers in Upper Michigan's Copper Country. From its roots, four faculty members and 23 students on the second floor of the old Houghton Fire Hall on Montezuma Avenue, Michigan Tech evolved into a leading public research institution.
The university?s seven Colleges and Schools develop, apply, and communicate science, engineering, technology, and mathematics in more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Gifted faculty guide motivated students in rigorous studies through deep engagement, design thinking, and leadership committed to the transformative power of STEM education. Undergraduates research opportunities begin right away. Through Enterprise, Senior Design, Pavlis Honors College, and The Alley makerspace, students learn, build, and do. Michigan Tech creates the future.
From the depths of the world's largest freshwater lake by surface to 273,000 square feet of research space. From the first ideas scrawled on a whiteboard to licensed life-changing technologies. Clouds made to order, cold-weather performance testing, detecting vitamins in human tears, Michigan Tech has provided grounds breaking results. Research at Michigan Tech brings faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, community, government, and industrial partners together to create the future.
The Van Pelt and Opie Library is a popular and central resource for students, faculty, and staff. Open an extended number of hours per week and with overnight access, the library offers over 750 seats in a wide array of arrangements to support group work and collaboration, individual, silent study and 23 group study rooms. Over 280 Windows, Linux and Macintosh high-performance computer workstations are situated in various configurations throughout. A caf?, three-season garden/patio and a service center that lends laptops, scientific calculators, cameras and other convenience equipment also contributes to making the library the busiest building on campus with over 650,000 visits per year.
Michigan Tech isn?t on the way to anywhere and Huskies wouldn't have it any other way. When students aren?t in class or conducting research, they participate in more than 220 student organizations, music and fine arts, and cultural events including the Upper Peninsula of Michigan's largest multicultural festival, the Parade of Nations. Whether it's the All-Nighter frenzy to complete a Winter Carnival snow statue, or chasing the Northern Lights right outside student?s dorm, there?s a lot to do at MTU.
The beautiful campus in Michigan?s Upper Peninsula overlooks the Keweenaw Waterway and is just a few miles from Lake Superior. The area?s waters, forests, and snowfall (218 inches annually) offer skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, and paddling opportunities. Historic downtown Houghton is active with locally owned shops, eateries, high-tech companies, music festivals, and parades.
