Overview

Overview

Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University (RGU) welcomes more than 16,000 students from more than 132 countries, was awarded Gold in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework and voted best Scottish university for graduate prospects in the 2017 Guardian University Guide.

Set between two rivers in the North-East of Scotland, Aberdeen is a cosmopolitan city within ‘Scotland’s Castle Country’ and its spectacular coastline and nearby mountains are perfect for outdoor pursuits such as surfing and snow sports.

On the banks of the River Dee, the Robert Gordon University’s parkland campus features a number of contemporary, state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities which house its 12 academic schools. Also on campus are its modern library and sports centre, and all of this sits alongside the University’s many support services.

RGU provides affordable accommodation with a range of on-campus, off-campus and private rental options. As the 2nd most affordable city in the UK for students (NatWest, 2017) Aberdeen has much to offer. It has an array of clubs and societies and more than 30 sports clubs including badminton, water polo, hockey, rock climbing, football, rugby and cheerleading.

Academic staff combine first-class qualifications with industry experience, and students benefit from work placements and internships. Many courses hold professional accreditations and alternative pathways are available at the embedded International College and Graduate School.

Due to strong links with companies including Accenture, BP and Shell, RGU is able to offer a range of bursaries and scholarships at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Ongoing support is provided by the International Student Service, the RGU: ResLife team and the Employability Hub, and RGU has an outstanding 96.3% graduate employability record (HESA 2017).

More than 85,000 global alumni provide a wealth of expertise with many actively engaged as mentors and employers to current and graduating students.

Teaching quality

Robert Gordon University is a dynamic, modern and professional university with an international reputation for providing high quality education (Sunday Times 2016). RGU was also awarded a TEF Gold award this year, putting it in the top 20% of Universities in the UK.

Robert Gordon University is well-established in the energy markets, much like the city of Aberdeen where it resides. As such, its engineering courses are renowned for not only being taught well in Europe’s gas and oil capital, but also having great links with local businesses and easy access to work placements.

Despite RGU’s reputation in the energy industry, healthcare is actually the subject with the highest percentage of RGU students enrolled in full or part time study, demonstrating the variety of course available.

The University’s teaching methods and lecturers are generally regarded by postgraduate students as helpful and engaging. The hands-on element of many of its courses is also seen as a huge positive and ensures students stay engaged and interested in their subject.

Many undergraduate courses at RGU also take a very practical approach to learning. Lecturers at the university receive a lot of praise from student reviewers for the support they offer to students as well as the fact they are very personable and approachable.
