Samford University is Alabama’s top-ranked private university with nationally ranked academic programs rooted in the university’s Christian mission. Located in suburban Birmingham, Samford was founded in 1841 and is the 87th oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It enrols 5,206 students from 46 states and 32 countries in 10 academic units: arts, arts and sciences, business, divinity, education, health professions, law, nursing, pharmacy and public health. Chartered as Howard College in 1841, the school survived two fires, the Civil War, a century of financial turmoil and two relocations to become one of the region's top universities. From its meagre beginnings in Marion, Alabama, with only 31 students, Samford is now home to almost 5,000 students on a beautiful Georgian-Colonial style campus in Homewood, Alabama. Samford offers 30 undergraduate and graduate/professional degrees. There are 158 undergraduate majors, minors and concentrations. Graduate/professional degrees are offered in business, divinity, design studies, education, health professions, environmental management, law, music, nursing, pharmacy and public health. The university’s College of Health Sciences is adding many new undergraduate and graduate/professional programs in the next few years. Campus is only minutes from the heart of Birmingham. This metropolitan area of about one million people is rich in history and provides an extended context for experiencing all that college can be. With museums, galleries, parks, gardens, music, sports and other entertainment options, there is something for everyone. Samford is located in Homewood, a suburban community of about 26,000 that embraces its partnership with a nationally-recognized university. Its unique downtown features boutiques, trendy restaurants and established Birmingham restaurant traditions.
