Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students must meet the English language requirements to study at the university. Students can do this through an English language test or by completing the SUNY New Paltz Pathway Program.

The Haggerty English Language Program is ideal for prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students who meet the academic requirements, but not the English language requirements. Students are conditionally admitted to the university and undertake the intensive English course. Once students complete Level 4 Academic Purposes, they can begin their academic studies. Students can also earn credits towards their degree during their English studies.

English proficiency score requirements

  • IELTS: 6.5
  • PTE Academic: 58
  • Duolingo English Test: 105

MS Computer Science and MS Electrical Engineering:

  • IELTS: 6.0
  • PTE Academic: 50
  • Duolingo English Test: 105

MA English or MSed TESOL:

  • TOEFL iBT: 90

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students must meet English language requirements, and there are several ways to demonstrate this for admission.

SUNY New Paltz offers conditional admission to both undergraduate and postgraduate students through its English Language Pathway option at the Haggerty English Language Program on campus. This means that students are not required to take the IELTS or TOEFL for admission, but rather can be conditionally admitted based on their academics and other application requirements. The TESOL and English Literature postgraduate programs do require IELTS 7 or TOEFL iBt 90, and no conditional admission is available for these two programs.

Students who are conditionally admitted then take an English language placement test during orientation when they arrive. If students have below 6.5 IELTS or 80 TOEFL iBt level of English, then they begin with intensive English courses, and Academic English courses (for credit) when they reach Level 4 of the program. This prepares them for the rigor of an American university environment. Once they finish the program, students matriculate and continue with their undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

While undergraduate international students are not required to submit SAT scores for admission, most postgraduate students will need to take either the GRE or GMAT exam. For MBA, students must score either a 450 overall on the GMAT, or a 300 overall on the GRE. For MS Computer Science, students must score a minimum of 151 on the quantitative section of the GRE. MS Electrical Engineering students must score a minimum of 156 on the quantitative section of the GRE.

Its English Language Pathway option at the Haggerty English Language program on campus offers conditional admission to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The TESOL and English Literature postgraduate programs require IELTS 7 or TOEFL iBt 90, with no conditional admission available for these programs.

Conditionally admitted students then take an English language placement test when they arrive.
