Overview

Established in 1966, the University of Bath offers its students a world-class education, with excellent facilities and an idyllic campus location. Bath has just been named University of the Year 2023 by the Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

As a research-led institution, the university specialises in engineering, management, humanities, science, and social science courses. Bath is home to a diverse community, with 32 per cent students enrolled at the university coming from outside the UK and representing over 147 nationalities worldwide.

The university's peaceful campus is based in South West England. The institution received an 86 per cent student satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey 2022 and the campus provides a vibrant students scene while the bustling city of Bath offers plenty of pubs, clubs and bars nearby. Students can also relax by the beautiful riverside and surrounding green spaces.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of Bath is bursting with historic architecture and exciting cultural events that take place throughout the year, including festivals, exhibitions, sports, and concerts.

International students can either live on the university's campus or in accommodation within the city itself. Transport is affordable and easy, with cheap, quick bus routes between the city and campus. Students are also well connected to London, which is less than 90 minutes away by train.

The university prides itself on teaching future leaders and providing students with innovative knowledge and skills, creating graduates that make a positive impact on society. The institution is ranked 5th for graduate prospects by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 and 5th for career after 15 month in the Guardian University Guide 2023.

Top 100 for six subjects worldwide

The University of Bath has been recognised as one of the top universities in the world, having been ranked 166th out of 1,300 universities around the world in the QS World University Rankings 2022 and is placed in the top 100 of the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2022.

The university ranked highly for sports subjects (joint 7th overall) in the QS World Rankings by Subject 2021. It is also placed in the top 100 worldwide for architecture and the built environment, development studies, business and management, mathematics, and social policy and administration. The university also ranks 201 to 250 overall in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.

Bath performed exceptionally well across recent UK university rankings. This includes:

  • Complete University Guide 2023 – 8th overall, and 6th for graduate prospects
  • Guardian University Guide 2023 – 7th overall, with 11 subjects in the top ten

Research

92% of the University of Bath research submitted to the Research Excellence Framework (REF ) 2021 achieved the two highest classifications of ‘world leading' or ‘internationally excellent'.

Bath is completely committed to its world-class research, with a GBP 165 million portfolio of research grants and contracts.

As one of only four universities in South West England in the GW4 Alliance, Bath has strong relationships with the most research-intensive and innovative universities in the UK. With its world-class research expertise, the alliance works together to address major global challenges.

Teaching

The University of Bath's diverse teaching methods provide students with real-world experience. Courses are research-driven and specifically designed to meet industry needs and requirements. Pre-sessional and foundation courses

International applicants who don't meet Bath's English language requirements can attend a pre-sessional course. The pre-sessional course helps students become ready to pursue degree-level studies though improving speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

The university also runs an International Foundation Year for international students who don't meet the academic requirements of an undergraduate course. Delivered by the university's partner institution, Bath College, this full-time course lasts one year. Once completed, students can directly progress onto their chosen course.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. These requirements are in place to ensure students can cope with and benefit from their chosen academic course.

English language requirements vary across the university's departments and are grouped into four categories - A, B, C and D. English language proficiency requirements at the University of Bath are generally a minimum of:

  • IELTS – minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT – minimum overall score of 90 with no section band below 21

The University of Bath also accepts other language tests, and applicants must achieve equivalent results. Tests must have been taken within the 24 to 30 months prior to the intended course start date.

Because requirements are course-dependent, international students are encouraged to check the conditions of the specific course they're interested in.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

International students can apply for a range of scholarships to support them with their studies. Undergraduate scholarships and Postgraduate scholarships are available. These include:

Chancellor's Scholarship

A tuition fee waiver worth up to GBP 2,000 is available for first-year international students who demonstrate academic excellence.

Deans Award for Academic Excellence Scholarship

A tuition fee waiver worth GBP 5,000 is awarded to eligible international students studying for a master's degree at the university. Applicants need to demonstrate strong academic credentials and background of achievement and success.

Global Leaders Scholarship

A grant of GBP 5,000 is awarded for international master's degree students who demonstrate exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. The award is a tuition fee waiver and requires that the recipients will also showcase leadership potential.

International Baccalaureate 50th Anniversary Scholarship

Up to GBP 6,000 tuition fee waiver for first-year international students who demonstrate academic excellence in the IB.

Winning Women in Technology Scholarship

Ten female students who accept a paid industrial placement at J.P. Morgan's technology department as a software engineer will receive this scholarship. It is valued at GBP 3,000 for each year of study up to three years.

Facilities

Facilities

Over the past decade, the University of Bath has invested over GBP 450 million in a range of high-quality facilities for its main campus. This includes a GBP 10.9 million arts and management building, and a GBP 30 million Sports Training Village. Students can take a tour through one of the university's virtual open days.

Other facilities at the university include:

  • Library – open 24 hours a day with helpful support staff, it has an extensive collection of learning resources and study spaces
  • Students' Union (SU) – the SU building has food outlets, pub, nightclub, the Student Centre and SU offices
  • Dental Centre – NHS and private dental services
  • Medical Centre – NHS treatment and services including medical appointments, vaccinations, prescriptions, and advice
  • Chaplaincy – space and support for people with all faiths or no faith
  • Learning Commons – dedicated spaces across campus where students can study independently or in groups.

Accommodation

The university provides international students with well-designed and comfortable accommodation, both on-campus and within the city. There is a range of housing options to suit individual budgets and lifestyles, including students with disabilities and medical conditions.

Sport

Students can join one of 50 sports clubs run by the SU. Each club welcomes new members, whether they are a novice or a professional. All students can access the Sports Training Village, which hosts a gym, sports and fitness centre, coaching, physiotherapy, and sport science services.
