Overview

The University of Nottingham is a Russell Group and Universitas 21 university with a global reputation for teaching and research, ranked 103rd in the world and 18th in the UK in the QS World University Rankings 2022.

Nottingham is also ranked as a UK top 20 university in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021. It is the Sports University of the Year in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

The university's roots date back to 1881 and it has been awarding degrees since 1948. Nottingham has a history of world-changing research, from the development of MRI technology to the ongoing fight against modern slavery and world hunger.

With campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, the university is home to over 47,500 students from more than 150 countries, with over 34,500 based in the UK. The university provides a global experience for all students, and supports international and EU students with a range of scholarships, specialist guidance and English language courses.

Nottingham students benefit from outstanding careers support, internship opportunities, and links with employers. Nottingham also offers an unforgettable student experience, including more than 200 societies in its Students' Union. The university has a strong reputation for sport and finished second in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) league in 2018-19.

The UK campuses are based in the friendly, historic city of Nottingham in central England. The city is world-famous for the legends of Robin Hood, and is a UNESCO City of Literature. There's plenty to explore including a castle, parks and gardens, quirky cafes and shops, world restaurants, cultural festivals and buzzing nightlife.

Local sports venues include Trent Bridge cricket ground, two football stadiums and the National Ice Centre. There are excellent transport links to local attractions, London and other major cities.

The university is planning a series of open days in June, July and September 2021, including online events that will be accessible to students around the world, as well as campus tours and in-person activities for students who are able to come to Nottingham.

Applications for these scholarships in 2021 opened in February, with closing dates in April and May. Students must apply for a degree course and receive an acceptance offer before applying for a scholarship.

The university is contributing to the world's ongoing fight against Covid-19 through research into the virus, treatment, vaccinations and the global impact of the pandemic. Nottingham academics regularly share this expertise with the media and public. The university has also provided high-tech medical equipment to the government and hundreds of students and staff have volunteered to support the National Health Service (NHS).

Steps have been taken to protect students and staff during the pandemic with the university providing remote teaching and support through online channels. New safety and hygiene measures have also been implemented on campus.

International undergraduate virtual open day

Undergraduate students looking to discover more about studying at the institution have the opportunity to attend a virtual open day. Students can explore what's on offer at the university, interact with knowledgeable staff, have questions answered, and get more information on application procedures and scholarship options. Registration is required for the event and is free for all international students. The virtual event takes place on Teams on Wednesday, the 21st of September 2022, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm (British Standard Time).

Study at Nottingham

Nottingham offers degree courses at undergraduate, master's and doctoral level across many subject areas, from humanities and languages to sciences, engineering, architecture and medicine, along with social sciences such as business, economics, politics and law. Foundation and pre-master's courses are on offer, as well as academic English courses which are accredited by the British Council.

Professor Kevin Bales is one of the world's leading researchers in contemporary slavery and human rights, while Professor Jonathan Ball is a virologist who has regularly shared his expertise with the media and public during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff, who received a knighthood in 2015 for his work in green chemistry, is world-famous for his Periodic Table of Videos YouTube channel.

Step into any of the university's campuses to discover a world of high-tech labs, lecture theatres and libraries, together with accommodation, sports facilities, shops, bars, green spaces and 24-hour security.

Nottingham students also have access to support services, careers guidance, English language support, visa advice, faith support and facilities, and the Students' Union. A free hopper bus runs between the campuses, while the city centre is accessible by bus or tram.

University Park Campus is one of the UK's largest and most beautiful campuses, with over 300 acres of parks and gardens, a boating lake, a student theatre and an arts centre, plus teaching and research facilities across all faculties. Recent developments include the David Ross Sports Village, a sector-leading sports and fitness centre, and Cripps Health Centre, which includes the UK's largest GP practice, a dental practice and a pharmacy.

Jubilee Campus is known for its innovative sustainable architecture. It's home to the schools of education, business and computer science, plus engineering facilities, a carbon neutral chemistry lab, an innovation park, and the Centre for English Language Education.

Sutton Bonington Campus, in the Nottinghamshire countryside, is home to the veterinary school and the school of biosciences, providing courses in agriculture, nutrition, brewing, plant and animal sciences. The campus includes a commercial farm, stables and a working dairy centre.

Medical and healthcare courses are taught across several locations including campuses, the Queen's Medical Centre, one of Europe's largest teaching hospitals, adjoining University Park, and other local hospitals in Nottingham, Derby and the East Midlands.

International campuses – in Ningbo, China, and Semenyih, Malaysia – provide the option of a global study experience. The university offers a selection of split-site courses, an inter-campus exchange programme and the annual Tri Campus Games.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

The university's country-specific information includes qualifications guidance and entry requirements for many countries, plus scholarships, contact details, student societies and more.

Undergraduate

Entry requirements for most undergraduate degree courses range from BBB to AAA at A level or 30 to 36 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

The university offers a range of one-year foundation programmes for international students whose high school qualifications don't qualify them for direct entry to undergraduate degree courses.

Master's

Master's degree courses require a bachelor's degree of a good standard – typically an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a British university or an equivalent grade from a recognised university in another country.

PhD research

In most cases PhD applicants must hold a master's degree of a good standard from a recognised institution. Many PhD programmes also require a detailed research proposal explaining the research plans.

English language requirements

The university accepts a variety of academic English tests and qualifications, including IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB and O level English.

Minimum requirements for degree courses typically range from IELTS 6.0 to 7.5 overall – or equivalent scores in other accepted tests.

Students who have completed their secondary education or a full degree course in an English-speaking country or institution do not need to provide any addition evidence of their English language ability.

The university offers a range of presessional English courses to help students meet the English requirements and develop their academic study skills. The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

The university offers an extensive range of international scholarships to help outstanding international and EU students make a positive impact in their studies and careers. Full details of 2021 scholarships will be announced later this year.

Many schools and departments offer their own scholarships for selected courses. The university welcomes sponsored students and has excellent links with funding providers around the world.

Regional Excellence Awards

In 2020 the university launched a new range of undergraduate and postgraduate Excellence Awards covering a contribution towards tuition fees for a master's course or the first year of an undergraduate degree course.

There are separate Excellence Awards for different regions of the world, with all countries included. There are also UK International Excellence Awards for international students who have been studying at schools, colleges or universities in the UK.

Developing Solutions Masters Scholarship

Developing Solutions is Nottingham's flagship scholarship, founded in 2001. These scholarships cover 50 per cent or 100 per cent of master's tuition fees for outstanding scholars from Africa and developing Commonwealth nations.

Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are the UK's prestigious fully-funded masters scheme for international scholars with leadership potential. Nottingham is a popular destination for Chevening Scholars, and the university is proud to be a Chevening partner institution. Applications for Chevening Scholarships in 2021 are open until 3 November 2020.

Research scholarships

A selection of tuition fee scholarships are available for international and EU students entering PhD courses.

Sports scholarships

The university supports elite athletes through a range of sports scholarships, covering financial support, coaching training and high-performance facilities. The International Sporting Excellence Award covers a contribution towards tuition fees especially for international sports competitors.
