Teaching quality

Teaching quality

Whatever subject students choose to study at the university, they will be taught and supervised by world-leading teachers, researchers and practitioners. Academic staff at the university are experts in their fields, and in the latest Research Excellence Framework (2021) 92 percent of Sheffield's research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. As a Russell Group university, teaching is driven by research expertise and Sheffield is ranked 22nd out of 250 universities in Europe for teaching excellence (Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Rankings 2022).

During their time at Sheffield, students are encouraged to manage their own time to build upon vital organisational skills and prepare for the world of work. In addition to becoming specialists in their chosen subject, students will develop their problem-solving, research, analytical, team working, and leadership skills, as well as increasing their confidence, and becoming resilient and adaptable.

The University of Sheffield works closely with business, industry, governments and international organisations to ensure that course content meets the demands of the field. Many courses feature alumni and guest lecturers who provide vital insight to students about their profession or industry.

Leading teaching facilities

The university continually invests in facilities to create the best learning environment for students, including an Information Commons library which has over 100,000 books and 500 computers, and the Diamond, a multidisciplinary teaching facility, with 2,540 study spaces, nine lecture theatres, a jet engine control room, a machine shop, and a virtual reality suite.

Many of the facilities are interdisciplinary, and there are also state-of-the-art laboratories for clinical, engineering and science subjects with specialist, industry standard equipment, as well as music technology spaces, broadcast studios, multimedia newsrooms and a fully equipped financial trading room.

Subject areas

The University of Sheffield is made up of five academic faculties.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities

The university's arts and humanities has been recognised as world-leading, ranking 67th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2022. Departments include East Asian Studies, English, History, Languages and Cultures, Music and Philosophy.

Faculty of Engineering

Consisting of seven departments including Aerospace Engineering, Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, and Mechanical Engineering.

Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health

This faculty is home to the university's Medical School as well as departments in Dentistry, Health Sciences, Human Communication Sciences, Neuroscience, and Oncology and Metabolism.

Faculty of Science

Consisting of five departments including Biosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Astronomy and Psychology.

Faculty of Social Sciences

The faculty is made up of 13 departments including the university's triple-crown accredited Management School, as well as the departments of Architecture, Economics, Education, Geography, Information School, Journalism, Landscape Architecture, Law, Politics, Sociology, Urban Studies and Planning, and the interdisciplinary Sheffield Methods Institute. Sheffield's social sciences placed 88th globally and law placed 64th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

Student life

Sheffield is a vibrant city which is close to some of the UK's most beautiful countryside. Home to more than half a million people, the city is the fourth biggest in the UK with an exciting music and arts scene. The city also boasts lots of outdoor space, including over 200 parks, beautiful gardens and woodland such as the Sheffield Botanical Gardens and Weston Park which are both a short walk from the main campus. Sheffield is a welcoming and friendly city, and it's one of the UK's most affordable student cities.

Guaranteed accommodation

The University of Sheffield guarantees to find students a place in their accommodation for the duration of their studies, providing they meet a few simple conditions. All accommodation includes a private bedroom and free Wi-Fi. The majority of rooms are en suite so students will have their own bathroom and WC.

Outstanding support

The University of Sheffield has been welcoming international students for more than 100 years and provides a range of support services to help students succeed in their studies and settle into university life. Across the university, there are expert advisers who can answer any questions, whether students would like to know more about scholarships, courses, accommodation, or what it's like to live in Sheffield.

Scholarships & Funding

The University of Sheffield welcomes scholarship applications from high-achieving students who can demonstrate excellent academic achievement and potential. Full terms and conditions apply.

International scholarships for 2023 entry include, but are not limited to:

50 percent tuition fee scholarships for undergraduate courses* for each year of study (subject to achieving a 60 percent average). Students need to hold an offer before they can apply for this scholarship.

25 percent tuition fee scholarships for postgraduate taught courses*. Students need to hold an offer before they can apply for this scholarship.

Other awards may be available depending on nationality, domicile or subject of study. Students can use the university's Funding Calculator to find out more about available funding.

*A small number of courses in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health are not eligible for these scholarships.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

The University of Sheffield has been welcoming students from all over the world for many decades and has a lot of experience in assessing and understanding the many different international qualifications. Visit the country pages to see more information on acceptable qualifications for specific countries. Specific grades, subjects and English language requirements vary by course and more information can be found on the university website.

English language requirements

The university accepts a range of different English language qualifications. The English Language Teaching Centre offers pre-sessional English language courses for those who need to improve their levels to meet the entry requirements for their undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

Undergraduate

The University of Sheffield accepts a range of different international qualifications for direct entry onto undergraduate courses. If students do not meet the requirements, they can apply for one of the university's pathway programmes.

To apply for an undergraduate course, students need to apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Sheffield's UCAS code is S18 SHEFD. There is no campus code.

Postgraduate Taught

Holders of a good bachelor's degree from a recognised university will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate diploma or master's programmes. Students applying for a postgraduate taught course can apply using the online application form. The university's most popular courses receive many more applications than study places available.

Postgraduate Research

Holders of a good bachelor's degree and a good master's degree from a recognised university will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate research programmes.

Pathway programmes

If students haven't yet met the entry requirements to join one of the undergraduate or postgraduate courses, they can join a foundation or pre-master's programme at the University of Sheffield International College.
