VU’s Australian-first Block Model pedagogy has now received one of the Victorian Government’s highest honours for excellence, the Victorian International Education Award (VIEA). It has also been recognised with an award for innovation from the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA). The IEAA also recognised the university’s new First Year College during the annual conference – which was attended by over 1,600 educational and government officials.

PG courses in Block Model

Building on the success of our award-winning Block Model for undergraduate courses, we are pleased to announce our Australian-exclusive way of learning is available across many of our postgraduate coursework offerings from Semester 1, 2021. With smaller, collaborative classes, you will focus on one or two units at a time instead of juggling traditional four units at once. Our timetabling also allows for greater flexibility and better work /life / study balance. Units will last either four or eight weeks depending on the course:

  • Four-week – arts, education, health, sport and exercise science courses
  • Eight-week – business and selected engineering and science courses.

VU's new vice-chancellor

VU has appointed its next vice-chancellor and president, Professor Adam Shoemaker. Marking a new era for the university. Professor Shoemaker, the Vice-Chancellor and President of Southern Cross University since 2016, will join VU on the 14th of December, bringing years of experience from senior leadership roles at many Australian universities.

DSR learning in 2021

While the Australian borders remained closed, you can still achieve a world-class Australian qualification at VU by studying online, with digitally-supported remote (DSR) learning. We will be offering all courses in DSR learning mode to international students currently inside Australia in Semester 1, 2021, and most courses in DSR learning mode for students outside of Australia, with the exception of vocational education and training courses, which are unavailable online.

Block Model success

VU has replaced passive learning such as large, impersonal lectures with smaller group lectures and students taking up one subject at a time over a time period of four weeks. Since the award-winning Block Model was launched in 2018, international students have seen to be performing better with a pass rate of 93 per cent, among which 53 per cent of results are at distinction or above. The immersive class environment goes beyond academic results and helps students become independent and confident problem solvers and learners, preparing them for their career.

VU was awarded the IEAA Excellence Award in 2018 for its Block Model of teaching and its First Year College that helps students transition into university successfully, by The International Education Association of Australia (IEAA). It also awarded VU's Australia-first pedagogy for its innovation.

ORT learning in 2021

Until the Australian borders open again, VU is offering a selection of courses via Online Real Time (ORT) learning. This option allows students to commence their studies in their home country and then complete their qualification in Melbourne as soon as it is safe to travel to Australia. ORT learning maintains a classroom environment using Zoom and allows students to take part in group discussions, interact with classmates and get immediate feedback. There is a small number of students in each virtual classroom. Courses available online include:

  • College of Engineering and Science

  • College of Health and Biomedicine

  • College of Sport and Exercise Science

  • VU Business School

  • VU College (including higher education diplomas, English language and foundation studies)

Vocational education and training courses are not available online.

For international students in Australia, the university is currently offering online real-time learning across its comprehensive course range. The university will return to on-campus, in-person learning once local restrictions are eased.

No.1 for employability

VU graduates have been ranked Australia's most employable by more than 3,400 Australian employers. According to the 2020 Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching Employer Satisfaction Survey, Australia's most in-depth survey of employer satisfaction, Victoria University ranked number one in Australia for employability skills at 92.8 per cent second for adaptive skills and collaborative skills and third for foundation skills. Employability skills rated students for being able to work under pressure, be flexible in the workplace, meet deadlines, grasp the nature of the business and demonstrate leadership skills.

In other fantastic news, Victoria University has been ranked third in Australia for learner engagement, and fifth for skills development, according to the Australian Government's 2020 Student Experience Survey (SES).

Academic requirements

Undergraduate programmes

Students applying for a bachelor (undergraduate) degree must possess a secondary school qualification – that is equivalent to the Year 12 certificate in Australia.

Additionally, students are advised to check for other international requirements, including English language requirments, for their respective programmes.

Postgraduate programmes

Students looking to enrol into any of the postgraduate programmes must have completed an undergraduate programme – that is equivalent to a bachelor honours degree, a bachelor degree or a graduate diploma by Australian standards.

English language requirements

Entry into undergraduate or postgraduate programmes requires students to have completed any one of the following exams that tests their English language proficiency:

Undergraduate programmes

  1. TOEFL Internet: 67 (overall score) with minimum section scores of:
    • Reading: 15
    • Listening: 12
    • Writing: 21
    • Speaking: 18
  2. IELTS: 6.0 (overall score) with a minimum of 6.0 for each band.

VU International VCE Scholarship

The International VCE Scholarship rewards and recognises international students in their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

Study level: Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

VU College Diploma Merit Scholarship

The VU College Diploma Merit Scholarship recognises and rewards international student achievement in the first semester of study at VU.

Study level: higher education Diploma of Business (Enterprise), Information Technology or Engineering.

Australia Awards Scholarships

These are administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and offered by the Australian Government. These offer citizens of the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa, the opportunity for full-time study at Australian education institutions at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These are inclusive of tuition fees, living allowance, flight charges, overseas student health cover and academic support.

20% tuition fee reduction for the entire standard duration of eligible courses. Pathway to Victoria Scholarship*

VU Alumni Discount*
