What's new

York University is working tirelessly to respond to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis and is developing a plan that will ensure that normal campus operations can resume in a timely manner while safeguarding the health and well-being of all students and staff. In its response planning, the university is placing public health and government directives at the heart of its response, in addition to close work with other universities and partners in Ontario. York's plan is designed to serve the best interests of the entire community both on and off its campuses.

York's new Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change opened in September 2020 as a call to action to respond to the most pressing challenges facing people and the planet. This new faculty brings together world class scientists and scholars who are producing research on the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, intensive urbanization and how these dynamics impact the most vulnerable.

York has continued to advance important longer-term initiatives like the Markham Centre Campus (MCC) in Markham, a fast-growing suburb of Toronto. The campus will open to students in 2023. The new MCC gives York students an opportunity to take part in innovative academic programs while choosing between a rich array of experiential education activities and partnering on pressing research problems in a high-demand area of Ontario. It will be a state-of-the-art campus that gives thousands of students a high-quality, research-intensive learning experience.

York is also investing in a new School of Continuing Studies located at the Keele campus, which is the first Continuing Studies building of its kind in North America. The School of Continuing Studies is home to cutting-edge Continuing Professional Education programs and the world-renowned York University English Language Institute (YUELI). The new facility will expand access to the English-language university pathways that support international students and new Canadians.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

York supports every international student throughout their unique university journey. Beyond academic achievement, the institution strives to enrich student experience and make students feel at home through tailored services designed specifically for international students which enhance their personal and professional development and support their physical and mental well-being.

Courses and programmes are offered in different languages depending on the campus they are hosted from, with Keele offering English speaking courses and Glendon offering a bilingual French and English learning environment. In order to successfully apply to these campuses, applicants must provide sufficient evidence of language proficiency in their chosen program's language of instruction. In addition to this, applicants must satisfy the following criteria in order to be successful:

  • Meet minimum admission requirements
  • Meet program-specific requirements
  • Know the application deadlines
  • Application submission
  • Submit all required documentation
  • Consider a modified admission request (for students with a diagnosed disability or extenuating circumstances that may have affected academic performance).
  • Check on Transfer Credit for Advanced Placement

Facilities

Facilities

The Keele campus is a self-contained modern urban campus with 90 plus buildings including academic and athletic facilities, residences, student service locations and 40 plus restaurants and shops.

Keele is a self-contained community located in the northern part of Toronto. The campus is home to five libraries, 92 buildings, athletic facilities, residences, a shopping mall and green, groomed outdoor common areas make up a buzzing campus primed for academic success and an active campus life.

The Keele campus is also home to many research centres and many new state-of-the-art facilities, including the Sherman Health Sciences Research Centre, the Life Sciences building and a new Student Centre. While many of York's programs are based on Keele campus, students are welcome to take courses at either campus.

The Glendon campus, located in mid-town Toronto, is the Centre of Excellence for French-language and Bilingual Post-secondary Education in Southern Ontario. Glendon is known for its beautiful rose gardens and connections to the Global Francophone community.

York also provides free shuttle services between the Glendon and Keele campuses, and a VanGO service, designed to help students with disabilities get around campus. There are also 9,200 plus parking spaces.

The new Markham campus, opening in autumn of 2023, will create positive change in the York Region and City of Markham community. It will offer employer-aligned degree programs, certificates and other credentials, with a rich array of experiential education activities, in high demand areas such as business and entrepreneurship, data analytics, new media and communications.

York also has campuses in Costa Rica and Hyderabad. The EcoCampus in Las Nubes, Costa Rica supports the protection of the biological, ecological and social values of the Las Nubes Biological Reserve, and the high-tech centre in Hyderabad.

York University is proud to offer entrance scholarships and awards to international students to help with the costs of tuition. Some of the scholarships and awards that are available include:

Application-based scholarships and awards

To be considered for these scholarships and awards, students need to submit the online international student scholarship and award application. Students with both strong grades (''A'' average or equivalent) and who demonstrate leadership through community service or excellence in the arts or sport are encouraged to apply.

  1. International entrance scholarship of distinction

    • Three are awarded per year, valued at CAD 35,000 per year. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years of full-time undergraduate study if the student maintains high academic standing each year.
  2. Global leader of tomorrow award for international students

    • Two are awarded per year, valued at CAD 20,000 per year. It is renewable for an additional three years of full-time undergraduate study if the student maintains a high academic standing each year.
  3. International circle of scholar's scholarship

    • One is awarded per year, valued at CAD 15,000 towards a student's first year of study.
  4. York University academic excellence scholarships for international students

    • Five to ten are awarded per year, valued at CAD 5,000 to CAD 10,000 towards a student's first year of study.
  5. York science scholars award

    • Awarded to 25 applicants who are admitted to the Faculty of Science.
