Wondering when to start your application process? Here’s our step-by-step guide to help.

Understanding the application process for universities and colleges abroad can be confusing since it’s a lot different from the procedure followed in Indian universities. Most universities and colleges abroad offer two intakes around the months of September and January, some may also accept a third intake around April or May. A lot of students face difficulty in starting with the application process, here’s some help if you are applying for the upcoming 2019 intakes.

Visa preparation: 2 to 3 months

1. Do your research: 10 to 12 months

It’s best to start as early as possible. Begin by identifying the course that is most suitable for you – note down your strengths and interests, and search for the courses available as per your current qualifications.
Visit relevant university websites, look for their application procedures, requirements, deadlines and tuition fee. Get familiar with the available financial aids and scholarship and their applications. In short, keep all your research material ready.

2. Take the standardised tests: 9 to 10 months

Almost all universities and colleges require your scores of an approved English language proficiency test such as the IELTS.
Certain programs may also ask for a GRE, GMAT or SAT score. This will need your dedicated time and effort to in order to achieve a suitable score. Always keep your goal in mind whilst preparation. Check for the score accepted by the universities you intend to apply.
Start early with the preparation of your required tests.
Keep some buffer time aside in case you have to take the test again.

3. Application Preparation: 7 to 8 months

Shortlist universities: Once you have the scores with you, you’ll know where you stand. Shortlist universities accordingly. Also consider your preference, budget and location.
Prepare your application: It’s time to prepare your application. Start collating all your documents so that you have everything in place within the timeline.

Components of an application
Major documents that you’ll need in order to apply to universities abroad will include:
Application Form	This will include all your personal and professional details.
Statement of Purpose (SOP)	The most important component of your application, this essay will mostly talk about your background, reason to pursue your program in the stated university and your career goals. Invest a lot of time in writing your essay as this is what will help your application stand out in the crowd of thousands of candidates.
Transcripts	This is basically your academic record, similar to a consolidated mark sheet like we have in India (easily available from your respective university), which will include all courses you’ve taken with your grades, credits and degree received.
Letter of Recommendation (LOR)	An LOR is an academic letter of recommendation from any of your professors or managers that talks about skills, achievements, experience and contribution in your college or professional organisation. This letter enables the admission council to get an insight in your life and accordingly decide your admission.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume	A CV or a resume will give a comprehensive insight into your academic and professional timeline. Ensure to mention all of your degrees, certificates, internships and relevant work experience, but don’t go overboard. Discuss with your counsellor for all the necessary pointers.
Test Scores	As mentioned earlier, your scores will affect your chances to get into your preferred university or college. Therefore, it is mandatory to send your test scores with your application.

4. Admission decision: 3 to 4 months

You’ll start receiving acceptance mails and personal interview slots in the next few months’ time. Don’t delay in responding since your final acceptance will depend on the interview session.
Once you have the final acceptance from the university, take a well-thought decision after discussing with your counsellor and deposit the minimal amount to confirm your admission.
Apply for scholarships (if you are eligible) and other funding options so that you are able to start with your program in time.

5. Visa preparation: 2 to 3 months

Most countries allow you to apply for visa three months in advance from the day of your arrival. Gather all your documents and start with the paperwork. Your IDP counsellor will assist you with the required documentation.
Apply for your visa well in time. Remember, visa processing may take some time.

6. Pre-departure: 1 to 2 months

Make arrangements for your health insurance and accommodation.
It’s almost time to fly to a new country. Book your flight tickets beforehand in order to avoid last-minute bookings. Also, the later you book, the tickets will get more expensive.
Get yourself an international debit/credit card to help you survive during your initial days.
Gather all the documents and copies you’d need at the time of arrival. Also, start packing so that you’re well-prepared in time.
