The Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences is renowned for its teaching and research excellence. Four of its subjects, (English, Music, Philosophy and Theology and Religious Studies), were rated 'Excellent' by the Sunday Times University Guide 2008. The Legal Practice Course was the first in the country to receive Skillsmark accreditation and was awarded a Grade 1 - the top award of 4 possible grades - consolidating the University’s reputation as a provider of top quality, work-based learning. Skillsmark was established by Skills for Justice, the Sector Skills Council which covers all employers, employees and volunteers working in the UK justice system, as part of its mission to link learning to reputable and valued qualifications. The University has invested £81 million in its facilities over the past 5 years and the University now boasts an Eye Clinic, simulated hospital wards and operating theatre and a mock court room for law students. A further £124 million is planned to be invested over the next 5 years.

  • In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise Anglia Ruskin was the top-rated modern university for Psychology, 2nd for English Language & Literature (including contributions from Communications, Film and Media) and 3rd for History.
  • 8 areas of research had a proportion of their work defined as ‘world leading’: Allied Health Professions & Studies; Art & Design; English Language & Literature; Geography & Environmental Studies; History; Music; Psychology & Social Work; and Social Policy & Administration.
  • More than 30% of submissions were rated as 'internationally excellent' or 'world-leading'.

International

The main campuses at Cambridge and Chelmsford attract students not only from the East of England but in increasing numbers from mainland Europe and from further afield.

Employable Graduates

Anglia Ruskin seeks to provide its graduates with future/employability skills.

  • Anglia Ruskin provides an Employer Mentoring Scheme which has Home Office recognition. This scheme supports 2nd year undergraduates in thinking about their future by matching them to a mentor from their chosen field, who volunteers time and provides skills-building, support and encouragement.
  • According to the recent Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey, 89% of respondents who had studied a postgraduate course at Anglia Ruskin reported being in employment, compared to a national figure of 84%.

Cambridge Campus

The Cambridge Campus is in heart of the city and has recently undergone a £35 million redevelopment. Cambridge is a city renowned worldwide for its educational history, exquisite ancient architecture and huge cultural appeal. From Newton's law of universal gravitation to the discovery of the structure of DNA by Crick and Watson, Cambridge has profoundly helped to shape the world as we know it and students can fully appreciate and immerse themselves in this world-famous centre for learning. Cambridge has many attractions within the city walls, including the Botanical Gardens, going for a punt on the river Cam and the Fitzwilliam Museum. For those who prefer to shop the city hosts two shopping complexes, the Grand Arcade with its mixture of designer and high street shops, and the Grafton Centre which hosts one of the city’s cinemas. With a lively student nightlife of bars, restaurants and clubs, the city is home to several famous venues including the Corn Exchange, The Junction, the Cambridge Arts Theatre, the ADC Theatre, and Anglia Ruskin's own Mumford Theatre. There is an annual programme of events ranging from the Film Festival and the Folk Festival to the Bumps and the Beer Festival!

Chelmsford Campus

The Chelmsford site, known as the Rivermead campus, is a 10-minute walk from the town centre in a picturesque location on the banks of the river Chelmer. Chelmsford is a centre of industry and commerce and as such has a thriving and innovative ambience, perfect for budding entrepreneurs. The birthplace of broadcasting, Chelmsford attracts a wealth of cultures which makes it ideal for anyone to immerse themselves in its cosmopolitan environment. Also in recognition of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year, Chelmsford was one of three towns to have been awarded ‘city’ status. There is plenty on offer in the city. For sports fans it is the home of Essex County Cricket Club and the city even has its own successful ice hockey team, the Chelmsford Chieftains. There is plenty on offer for shoppers too with a healthy mixture of high street brands, unique independent stores and two shopping malls. Within easy reach of Chelmsford, shoppers can find themselves in Stratford, home to the new Westfield shopping complex. Chelmsford has a vibrant, cosmopolitan nightlife of clubs, bars, cafés and restaurants; you will never be short of ideas. With two theatres, a multi-screen cinema and the Chelmsford Film Club celebrating its 25 year anniversary, as well as unique live music venues including: The Golden Fleece and The Bassment, there really is something for everybody. Finally the famous V Festival which attracts up to 65,000 people, is held in Hylands Parks every august.
