Perth, the capital of Western Australia (WA), is a stunning modern city with an ideal combination of cultural buzz, green spaces and easy access to beaches and coastline trails. It's a great place to live as a student, known for its relaxed lifestyle, sunny climate and vibrant city life. It is also a designated ‘regional centre', providing opportunities to prosper in WA after graduation.

TAFE International Western Australia (TIWA) is owned and operated by the Western Australian State Government. TIWA facilitates the enrolment of international students into vocational education and training (VET) courses in WA TAFE (Technical and Further Education) colleges.

Students can choose from over 100 certificate and diploma courses delivered across 17 campus locations around Perth and regional WA in the following study areas:

  • Accounting, Business and Marketing
  • Animal Care and Aquaculture
  • Automotive, Engineering, Surveying and Process Plant Technology
  • Aviation
  • Building and Construction
  • Creative Industries
  • Digital Media and Information Technology
  • Early Childhood Education and Community Services
  • Health and Beauty
  • Hospitality, Cookery and Tourism

What's new

What's new

TAFE continues to review and update its course portfolio and teaching methods to offer the best education possible to its international students.

As of March 2022, the institution is again able to welcome international students to attend courses in person following the change in government guidelines.

Providing students meet the Commonwealth Government requirements, they will be able to enter Australia without needing to quarantine.

A rapid antigen test will need to be taken within 12 hours of arriving in the country, with any positive result being reported. This testing arrangement is an interim plan and may be changed or removed at short notice – students are advised to check the Western Australia Government website for the latest updates.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

TAFE is highly regarded for the quality of its teaching. Students will learn from lecturers equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience working in industry. TIWA offers courses tailored towards a job ready outcome, so industry experience is a crucial step to transition students into their future career.

Courses are taught with a mix of work experience so that students get a feel for their future role, learn while on the job, and create ties that will serve once the qualification is complete.

Work placements are integrated into many courses. Students can step out of the classroom and get a real world insight into their chosen industry.

Study areas that include practical work placements in registered offsite agencies with industry partners are:

  • Animal Studies
  • Applied Fashion Design
  • Bricklaying and Carpentry
  • Community Services
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Health and Fitness and
  • Nursing.

Other TIWA courses include simulated work placements that replicate real work environments in on-campus facilities. Industry-experienced lecturers teach in classrooms and in practical environments like restaurants, laboratories and workshops. TIWA offers the latest industry technology, tools, machinery, processes and materials in all simulated work placements.

Study areas with simulated work placements are:

  • Automotive
  • Aviation

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for study at TAFE depend on a number of factors, including students' chosen subject area, the level they want to begin study (certificate or diploma), and their home country's educational system.

The minimum level of English proficiency required for entry into most TAFE courses is the equivalent of an overall academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.5 with no individual band score lower than 5.0. For some countries TIWA may accept high school English results. Some courses, such as nursing and early childhood education, require a higher level of English i.e. academic IELTS 6.0/7.0.

Generally, students that have completed the equivalent of Australian Year 10 will be ready for a certificate III qualification, while students that are educated to the equivalent of Australian Year 12 will be able to enter at certificate IV or diploma level.

For students that need to improve their English language skills, they can package an English course with their TAFE program. TIWA delivers English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) in partnership with Navitas English. TIWA also has partnerships with a range of private English language partners, which means students can receive direct entry into TAFE courses once the required level is achieved.
