Overview

One of the nation's largest public research universities, the University of North Texas (UNT) is located in the thriving Dallas Ft. Worth metropolis, one of the nation's fastest-growing economies.

A leading institution in North Texas, over 42,000 students are enrolled on its campus, which is located across 875 acres. Welcoming over 4,000 international students from 145 countries, UNT has 89 academic programs ranked among the nation's Top 100.

Founded in 1890, it offers 239 degree programs across 14 colleges, including 80 online programs, 109 bachelor's programs, 94 master's courses and 36 doctoral degrees. UNT also has a legacy of conservation and environmentalism, with green issues at the heart of its work. Recognized as a green college by the Princeton Review, over 50 of UNT's courses have a sustainability focus.

Consistently named as a top college in America by Forbes for 11 consecutive years, the university's teaching faculty and visiting scholars create an innovative international learning experience.

Ranked as a tier-one research institution by the prestigious Carnegie Classification, its programs are internationally recognized and UNT is amongst the nation's top 131 (top three percent) research institutions.

The university is currently developing a new campus in partnership with one of the nation's fastest growing cities, the city of Frisco. The upcoming campus will be an extension to both the current UNT Denton campus and Frisco campus, expanding academic opportunities across multiple campuses and online. This includes an additional 27 undergraduate and master's degree programs, in fields of the future such as advanced data analytics, sports and event management.

Its main campus is located within the bustling, student-friendly town of Denton. Regarded as one of the ten best American college towns, Denton offers a safe, vibrant social scene, with many exciting job opportunities nearby.

What's new

What's new

New campus

To accommodate programs of the future, UNT is currently developing a new campus, which will add a further 27 undergraduate and master's degrees. Created in partnership with the City of Frisco, the new campus will provide an expansion to both institutions, including online offerings.

The new branch campus will be spread across 100 acres of greenery, and buildings will be adapted to serve the campus community as it grows.

New programs

In partnership with Coursera, a new fully online Bachelor's of Applied Arts and Sciences (B.A.A.S) is now available at UNT. The course concentrates on eight key modules: Administration, Consumer Behavior, Data Analytics, Hospitality, IT, Media Innovation, Organizational Supervision and Social Wellness and Community. Tuition costs USD330/credit hour, making it one of the most affordable courses of its kind.

To meet industry demand within the technology sector, the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence allows students to choose between three AI specializations machine learning, autonomous systems or biomedical engineering.

The university has also partnered with the University of North Texas Health Science Center to offer an accelerated degree in biology and pharmacy. A quicker and less expensive way to study a high demand degree in the health sciences.

UNT's College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism commenced classes in its new Bachelor of Science in Event Design and Experience Management in Fall 2021. Students will be given the education and training that many of the leading companies in the event industry are hiring new talent for.

Rankings

Two of UNT's programs have recently ranked amongst the nation's top 10 graduate programs (U.S. News & World Report 2021). UNT's College of Health and Public Service has several of its programs ranked within the top 40 worldwide. The university also ranked 10th in the nation and 2nd in Texas on U.S. News & World's list of Best Online Master's in Education Programs.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

Students at the University of North Texas are taught by an expert faculty of 1,600 teaching staff, as well as several hundred visiting scholars from around the world, who regularly conduct their ground-breaking research and share it with students. This significantly enhances the student learning experience.

The university also has strong industry links and global commercial and academic partnerships that provide educational exchanges of knowledge and cultures between staff and students. This means that students are expertly prepared to enter the professional world and participate in important research and innovation.

UNT has environmental and green issues at the forefront of its strategy, with over 50 of its programs focusing on sustainability. This has led the institution to be recognized as a green college by the Princeton Review.

Department structure

Department structure

The University of North Texas offers a wide range of programs across 14 colleges and schools. Its programs are internationally recognized for innovative research and excellence. UNT's colleges include:

College of Education

Prepares students for careers in teaching, administration, counselling, kinesiology, and health specializations. Regionally and nationally recognized for teaching excellence.

College of Engineering

The fastest-growing college at UNT, it pioneers green technologies and surface engineering. Students are taught courses that have been specifically designed to meet industry needs. The fastest growing programs include biomedical engineering and materials sciences.

College of Information

Its interdisciplinary programs include library and information studies, which is ranked amongst the best in the U.S., and an innovative program in data science and learning technologies.

College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism

Home to the first undergraduate degree in digital retailing in the U.S. as well as a master's degree in International Sustainable Tourism, this college has the largest merchandising program in the U.S.

College of Music

One of the largest comprehensive music schools in the world students are taught by internationally acclaimed artists in a range of musical disciplines including conducting and music history. UNT College of Music is home to the number one ranked Jazz Studies program in the nation.

College of Visual Arts and Design

The college teaches the only Art Education PhD in Texas. Students can also study a nationally ranked graduate fine arts program and a top ranked graphic design program. Students from around the world are drawn to the innovative programs in fashion design and interior design.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Individual programs at the University of North Texas have different entry requirements.

As well as meeting the specific conditions of their chosen program, international applicants need to submit the following:

Some colleges may require evidence of aptitude through standardized test scores.

All international applicants need to show proof of English language proficiency. This can be shown in several ways, including completing Level 6 at UNT's Intensive English Language Institute, providing transcripts of an accepted academic program, or taking an English proficiency exam. The minimum proficiency scores in recognized tests are:

  • ACT: 21
  • AP English Language and Composition Exam: Score of 5
  • CAE: B Grade
  • CPE: Grace C
  • Duolingo: 100
  • GCE, GCSE or IGCSE: Grade C
  • IELTS: 6.0 overall
  • PTE: Overall score of 53
  • TOEFL: 79 overall score for internet-based (IBT), or 550 overall for paper-based.

TOEFL and IELTS tests must be taken within the last two years to be considered.

In addition to this, international applicants may need to meet set Federal government requirements. This includes proof of intent to study, sufficient funds, and health certification.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

International students can apply for a variety of different scholarships, which are awarded for financial need or academic excellence. The types of scholarships that can be applied for are university department-sponsored scholarships and external.

Some of the financial assistance provided by the university includes:

International Education Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded yearly to high-achieving students who contribute to UNT's campus internationalization. To be considered, undergraduate students need to be enrolled full-time at the university and have at least a 3.0 GPA.

International Student Texas Public Education Grant

Awards financial assistance to international students who are on F and J visas. To be considered, students must have financial need and be enrolled for one academic year before application.

Global Excellence Scholarship

New freshmen with a strong GPA and class rank can qualify for this merit-based scholarship. SAT or ACT score is optional. Awards from this scholarship range between USD 1,000 to USD 12,000 per year for up to four years. This scholarship can also provide an approximately 50 percent cost reduction on tuition fees.

International students may also qualify for additional scholarships, such as:

UNT has 15 halls of residence, ranging between single and triple occupancy. All university accommodation includes:

Dining

The university has five dining halls on its campus, which offers a range of different cuisines. Ranked second in the nation for its quality of food on campus (Delish.com), UNT also provides students with flexible meal plans throughout the year.

Sports and leisure

The Pohl Recreation Center houses modern sports and leisure facilities and programs across its 138,000 square-foot building. Student membership to the center is included in tuition fees. Its facilities include:
