About Mercer University

Mercer University is one of America’s oldest and most distinctive institutions of higher learning, offering rigorous programs that span the undergraduate liberal arts to doctoral-level degrees. Founded by early 19th century Baptists, Mercer — while no longer formally denominationally affiliated — remains committed to an educational environment that embraces the historic Baptist principles of intellectual and religious freedom.

With more than 8,700 students enrolled in 12 schools and colleges, on major campuses in Macon and Atlanta, medical school sites in Macon, Savannah and Columbus, and at regional academic centers in Henry and Douglas counties, Mercer is ranked among the top tier of national research universities by U.S. News & World Report.

At Mercer University, students have more than 180 degree options to choose from that best fit their academic needs. Traditional undergraduate program flips the traditional classroom on its side in an anything-but-typical college experience that will both nurture students and challenge them, and set them apart from the rest. Mercer's graduate and professional programs cover a broad range of career fields and advanced scholarship, equipping students to lead the way, in every way.

While offering a breadth of programs found at much larger universities, Mercer maintains an intimate, student focused culture more characteristic of smaller liberal arts colleges. Mercer’s uniqueness is found in the way the University integrates five defining components of its mission: Liberal Learning, Professional Knowledge, Discovery, Service to Humankind and Community.

The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of Mercer University, is a historic, 1,000-seat theater located in downtown Macon. The Grand Opera House is Central Georgia’s sole presenter of professional touring Broadway performances.

The 230,000-square-foot University Center (UC) serves as the focal point of activity for students, faculty and staff on the Macon campus. Along with housing a full schedule of activities from varsity and intramural sports to wellness and recreation programs, the UC also serves as a place for social gatherings. The Mercer Wellness Program at the UC offers fitness classes for all ability levels. Students, faculty and staff combine fitness and fun with cardio kickboxing, spin bike, yoga, aerobics, weight training and martial arts.

Nestled in the heart of Georgia, there’s something for everyone in Macon. The city is steeped in history — from ancient Indian mounds to Antebellum homes to a rich musical heritage. Students can enjoy a vibrant downtown that embraces independent restaurants, boutique shopping and a burgeoning arts scene. Or they can play outdoors at one of Macon’s many parks and recreation areas.
