Based in sunny California, National University is a large, private, non-profit institution which provides accessible higher education programs either on campus or online.

Established in 1971 by retired U.S. Navy captain, David Chigos, the university’s founding mission, is to serve the unique needs of lifelong learners by focusing on quality, access, and affordability. National University educates students across all 50 states and from 65 countries. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a rich cultural community. National University embraces diversity, and gladly welcomes students from all over the globe.

There are numerous undergraduate and graduate programs to choose from, ranging from healthcare to business and management, engineering to criminal justice and homeland security. With year-round enrollment, and the one-course-per-month format, students study at an accelerated pace, allowing them to graduate quicker and at an affordable price.

The university is primarily located in California where students will be able to find countless exciting activities to engage in outside of their studies. What’s new

The National University Language Institute has an extensive range of English Language and Pathway Programs (ELP). Here, students, visitors and professionals are able to enhance their interactive English language skills which are important for success in academic and professional settings, as well as in daily life.

The main programs available for international students:

  • English Communication – for improving skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing English
  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP) – for students who are planning to study at college- or university-level in an English-speaking country
  • English Communication and Culture – short term for groups looking for customized curriculum to meet the needs and expectations of the group.

Courses can be studied via the one-term-per-month structure. They are led by highly-qualified and passionate educators.

Department structure

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

Students applying to National University are supported by the International Admissions and Student Services teams which provide information, and guidance from application through graduation.

There are a number of entry requirements for successful admission.

Undergraduate

  • Successful completion of high school (year 12 or equivalent)
  • Grade point average minimum 2.0 (4-point scale)

Graduate

  • Four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Grade point average minimum 2.5 (4-point scale)
  • Bologna-compliant degree programs may be eligible
  • *Student’s with a three-year bachelor’s degree may be eligible to enroll into the Foreign Credential Bridge program (FCBP).

English Proficiency:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

  • 70 iBT undergraduate / 79 iBT graduate

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

  • 5.5 undergraduate (no bands lower than 5) / 6.0 graduate (no bands lower than 5)

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTEA)

  • 50 undergraduate / 58 graduate

iTEP

  • 5 undergraduate / 5 graduate

National University’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program

  • Level 800

Facilities

Facilities

For international students studying on campus or online via digital learning, there are many services available which are designed to ensure that students have a smooth and enjoyable educational experience.

The SOAR Student Portal is an online resource where students can view their schedule, grades, purchase bus passes and textbooks. The university also uses Blackboard Learn for assistance with studies.

The National University Library System has an immense collection of e-books, electronic databases, text journals, and other online resources. There is also the online bookstore, where students can find all of the textbooks needed for their lessons.

Each of National University’s campuses are closely located to downtown, beach areas, green spaces, museums and many other attractions. There are a number of activities arranged by the university for students to enjoy in their free time, including sightseeing trips and sports events, as well as the student-run clubs and organizations.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

At National University, international students pay the same amount of tuition fees as domestic students. The university has dedicated scholarships for international students and there are two international student scholarship programs. These are primarily awarded on the basis of academic excellence and help students financially during their studies at the institution.

International Student Scholarship

For international students applying to National University, a 50 percent discount on the first four academic courses is available.

International Student Leadership Scholarship

For international students who are already enrolled at National University, there is a 50 percent discount on two of their academic courses. Students must be able to show exemplary leadership skills in either an academic or community setting.
