What’s new

What’s new

NJIT has witnessed a lot of exciting developments recently. The Institute continues to invest in the renewal of its existing facilities in addition to adding new spaces, all of which are aimed at providing an exceptional teaching, learning and living environment.

The centrepiece of the Institute’s plans to renovate and revamp the campus is the 200,000-square-foot Wellness and Events Center. The Center boasts a 25-meter swimming pool, a 10,000-square-foot turf space, and a 3,500-seat sports arena.

The new, multi-disciplined Life Sciences and Engineering Center provides 21st-century research facilities and new opportunities for collaboration and learning. The new structure features a two-story atrium and presentation space for informal learning, gathering and teaching. There is also a new exterior plaza and a lounge area, with cosy nooks for students to study in and relax.

Along with its partners from government and industry, NJIT also celebrated the opening of Makerspace, a training-focused, rapid prototyping facility. The 10,000-sq.-ft. space houses equipment ranging from small 3D printers to large industrial machining centres, such as precision measurement and laser cutting machines. The facility is aimed at bringing manufacturers to the campus and providing them with the tools to build and test prototypes of their most innovative products.

With all these developments, in addition to significant and continuing improvements in the pipeline for labs and other facilities, NJIT seems set to embrace the challenges of living and working in the modern world.

What’s new

There have been a number of exciting recent developments at NJIT as it continues to invest in the advancement of its existing facilities. New spaces are being added with the aim of providing an exceptional learning and living environment which is filled with top class teaching.

The centerpiece of campus renovation is the 200,000 square foot wellness and events center, boasting a 25-meter swimming pool, 10,000 square foot turf space and a 3,500-seat sports arena. A new life sciences and engineering center offers a multi-disciplined home of research facilities to open the door to new collaboration and learning opportunities. It features a two-story atrium and presentation space along with a new exterior plaza and lounge area for students to study and relax.

NJIT Jumps into Top 100 for 2020 U.S. News College Rankings

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has risen nearly 50 places over the last two years, to be ranked 97th in America. NJIT has now joined the top 100 National Universities for 2020 in the annual U.S. News and World Report, assessing colleges and universities across the nation. Reflecting the institutions impressive teaching standards, staff have worked hard to improve the academic and social experience of students studying at NJIT.

The U.S. News and World Report decides its rankings based on a number of important different aspects, including outcomes, faculty resources, financial resources, student excellence, expert opinion and alumni giving. NJIT has seen impressive rises in student retention and graduation rates. Student applications have jumped from 4,300 in 2013 to more than 9,000 in 2019. This is in part down to the huge investments that have been made into teaching staff and research. In recent years, 150 new faculty members have been hired to facilitate more intimate class numbers of 20 or less to ensure optimum student – teacher contact time.

Over USD 170 million is spent annually on research activity at NJIT, granting New Jersey with an R1 rating in research by the Carnegie Classification. This is the highest possible rating.

Talking of the institution’s success, NJIT President Joel Bloom, said “we now are rated R1 for research by the Carnegie Classification. Forbes ranks us 1st in the nation for the upward economic mobility of our students from the lowest brackets of family income. Payscale.com ranks NJIT #43 out of more than 4,000 universities for the mid-career earnings of our graduates.”

International students can enrol in one of NJIT’s six schools and colleges:

The Newark College of Engineering has been providing quality engineering education since 1919. The college offers a range of courses at all levels, over a wide range of subject areas that include relatively unconventional choices such as Biomedical Engineering, Transport, Pharmaceutical Engineering and Occupational Health and Safety Engineering.

  • Double major, design an interdisciplinary major, or opt for an accelerated bachelor’s or master’s degree programme

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

NJIT considers applications from international students on the basis of their entire academic record, in particular their grades in math, science and English.

Admission criteria

NJIT considers highest scores obtained on the SAT or ACT, using the ‘math + critical reading’ composite. The expected average SAT score is 1190. It is recommended that those with scores below 1100 try and retake the test to raise their score.

International students whose native language is not English must demonstrate proof of proficiency in the language, by taking the TOEFL and scoring a minimum of:

  • 79 on the internet-based test
  • 213 on the computer-based test
  • 550 on the paper-based test

Alternately, a minimum score of 6.0 on the IELTS will also be considered for admission. Additionally, non-native speakers of English will need to take a placement test in English upon arrival on campus.

A complete application checklist would be:

  • Official secondary school transcript translated into English (or a notarized copy)

NJIT realises that finance is a major concern for most international students and to that end, facilitates the grant of loans and scholarships to lessen their financial burden. A large part of the financial aid for international students is available in the form of scholarships or private loans.

Private loans are offered through private agencies and lending institutions such as banks, and not through the University or the federal government. Any international student with an eligible U.S. citizen or permanent-resident co-signer may apply.

The International Presidential Scholarship is a scholarship award minus the out-of-state surcharge. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must apply for admission.

The Albert Dorman Honours College Scholarship is only for those students who have gained admission to the Albert Dorman Honours College, in which case they may qualify for additional financial assistance to study at NJIT.

Recreation

From freshmen to scholarship students, everyone is eligible to participate in varsity, club or intramural sports like soccer baseball, basketball, volleyball and judo. The Institute has superb facilities to encourage students to pursue their sporting interests.

  • The Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center houses a gym, a fitness centre, swimming pool, racquetball courts and a staffed health centre.
  • The renovated Lubetkin Field, the home of the men’s and women’s NCAA Division I soccer teams, is the venue for Phys Ed classes and intramural sports.
  • The Green, located right next to the Campus Center, is a peaceful, inviting spot to loosen up with a game of Frisbee and other games.

Theatre

For the culturally inclined, there is the 425-seat Jim Wise Theatre that hosts two student productions every year. The Department of Humanities offers a minor in Theatre and a Jim Wise Scholarship for those who participate in productions.

Newark New Jersey University Heights
New Jersey Institute of Technology is a leader in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, as well as disciplines in business, architecture and design. It?s six specialized colleges offer students the opportunity to be a part of a top-tier public research university and learning community in the most desirable areas of study. NJIT offers more than 125 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in six specialized schools instructed by expert faculty, 98 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their field. The Wellness and Events Center (WEC), opening November 2017, offers NJIT community a venue for sporting and social events, conferences, as well as two gyms, a running track, indoor turf field and a swimming pool.

NJIT is located in the vibrant University Heights district of downtown Newark, just 20 minutes from Manhattan by train. Newark is also New Jersey's cultural and economic capital, boasting performance spaces, professional sports, great food, and five other colleges nearby.
