Queen Mary University of London

Overview

Overview

Queen Mary University of London (Queen Mary) is a world-leading institution based at five campuses across east and centralLondon. Our history dates back to 1785, with the founding of England’s first medical school at the Royal London Hospital. Our roots can also be traced to the establishment of the People’s Palace in Mile End in 1887, which was designed to bring educational and cultural opportunities to the East End.Students can study a wide variety of degrees under subjects such as humanities, social sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering.

The institution strives to provide students with the perfect learning environment and has invested GBP 105 million in new facilities over the past five years. From a redevelopment of the Engineering Building that introduces brand new, state-of-the-art robotics facilities, to the UK’s first new dental school in forty years, Queen Mary is constantly improving to offer students access to the latest technology in their respective fields.

With five campuses across east and central London, international students will have plenty of opportunity to explore one of the most famous cities in the world.

Queen Mary boasts a hugely diverse student population and is ranked in the top 25 institutions in the world for international outlook, with over 25,000 students from more than 162 different countries (Times Higher Education 2017).

The award-winning careers service on offer at the institution provides students with the opportunity to book one-to-one careers appointments with trained advisors, look through over 2,000 work experience opportunities and attend events to meet employers from all over the UK. This has led to Queen Mary being ranked 10th in the UK for graduate starting salaries by the Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Research at Queen Mary is world-leading, as academics at the peak of their careers work to influence areas such as cancer treatment and astronomy. In fact, Queen Mary was ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of research outputs (i.e. at 3* and 4* level) in the most recent REF2014 exercise and is even a member of the prestigious Russell Group.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

Queen Mary is one of 24 leading UK universities represented by the Russell Group, that are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience, excellent graduate employability and unrivalled links with the business and public sector.

Queen Mary offers students a stimulating, supportive and high-quality learning experience, with teaching inspired by world-leading research. Queen Mary ranks second in London among Russell Group universities for student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2018), with a number of its subject areas receiving over 90 per cent for ‘overall satisfaction’ including drama, German, history, Iberian studies and medicine,.

Queen Mary’s teaching methods are varied. As well as lectures, students may also experience small group teaching: tutorials, seminars, workshops, exercise classes and problem-based learning (PBL) sessions (for medicine and some materials courses). Most students will also have the chance to work on group projects – this is a very useful experience for the real world of work, where team working ability is highly required.

All university students need to develop the skill of independent study and students will get good experience of this working on essays, reports, projects, final year dissertations and general reading around the subject. This can be a big difference from school or college, but is another very useful transferable skill.

The University’s Learning Development service teaches students a range of workshops on aspects like note-taking and organisational skills, and also runs tutorials on any aspect of study plus drop-in maths support.
