Overview

Overview

St. Clair College offers an all-round excellent college education with outstanding teaching, top learning facilities, student support services and an unforgettable student experience.

Established in 1967, St. Clair College is a widely lauded community college and home to around 30,000 students. Over 1,100 international students are admitted each year, and are given the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge to become employable graduates.

The college specializes in applied arts and technology. There are more than 120 diplomas, degrees and graduate certificates to study, in areas covering health, business, technology, trade, social services and media arts. Opening the doors to hundreds of different career paths, students can also choose apprenticeship courses or English language pathway programs.

To support their studies, international students have access to comprehensive services such as academic support, career counselling, accommodation and disability support. Outside of the classroom there’s plenty to get involved in, including 14 varsity sports teams.

The college is spread over three campuses in Essex and Chatham-Kent, Ontario. Close to Detroit, the locations offer unique North American experiences. Students can enjoy a peaceful, safe country and comfortable climate with plenty of sunshine. Canada is home to many races and cultures, with over 100 languages spoken. The local area provides secure and clean communities for students to live and thrive in. Beyond their studies, students can benefit from a graduate employment rate of 87.5 percent.

St. Clair College’s coat of arms bears the mythical griffin. This symbolizes rising above the ordinary, and students will do just that, they’ll discover new things, create lifelong relationships and gain the tools they need to embark on fruitful careers.

What’s new

What’s new

Brand new Sports Park

Students will now have access to top sporting facilities at the new St. Clair College Sports Park. It will feature specialized spaces and equipment for indoor tennis, softball, and volleyball, as well as a 1,500-seat soccer field that has artificial turf and a digital scoreboard.

The development is overseen by the Student Athletic Association and the Student Representative Council. It has received lots of support from the community, including a sponsorship from the Barry and Stephanie Zekelman Foundation and the CEO of Dominos Canada.

No.1 North American Cisco Networking Academy partner

Cisco has recognized St. Clair College as its top partner in North America, as 1,680 students enrolled with the program in 2018 alone. As well as this, St. Clair’s computer networking program has one of the best rates of enrolled females in Cisco-certified programs in Canada.

The Networking Academy is a global program that seeks to improve technology education and empower students to change their lives and that of those around them. The partnership brings many benefits to students at St. Clair College, mainly by providing them with the skills they need to stand out in the competitive job market. This recognition shows how the college is committed to supporting the growth of diversity in the tech sector locally and across the country.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

At St. Clair College, students receive an in-depth academic experience supported by experienced faculty and modern learning environments. Since 2004, over CAD 1.24 million has been invested in academic upgrades which has improved equipment, classrooms, labs and more.

St. Clair is the largest post-secondary health sciences educator in the province, and its Center for Applied Health Sciences demonstrates the college’s excellence. The center is a 100,000 square foot mock-up of a real hospital, with specialized labs for cardiovascular, ultrasound and respiratory therapy, as well as patient-care suites, a dental clinic and a pharmacy.

The college is dedicated to providing a fair and inclusive educational environment. The Center of Academic Excellence ensures all faculty members continue their knowledge and skill development, so students have the best learning experience possible.

Department structure

Department structure

Programs

St. Clair College specializes in health sciences, engineering technologies, community studies, liberal arts and sciences, business and information technology, art, media and design. Students can study full-time or part-time. There are over 100 undergraduate, post-graduate, diploma and certificate programs to choose from.

Apprenticeships

The college offers the opportunity to train and learn a skill through an apprenticeship. This means students can become certified in their trade through learning both at college and on the job. Programs can last two to five years, but students earn a wage and are already in the workforce before they graduate. Apprenticeships are overseen by the Ontario College of Trades (OCT).

Acumen in Toronto

Through the Ace Acumen Academy (AAA), St. Clair’s international students have the chance to study their academic programs in Toronto. Programs are tailored to the needs of international students, offering a unique metropolitan learning experience.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

This is an intensive English language pathway program where non-native English-speaking students develop their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills. It has an academic focus, and if completed successfully, students can directly enter a post-secondary program at the college.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students must meet a number of requirements to study at St. Clair College. They will also require a Canadian Study Permit to study in Canada, which they can apply for after receiving a Letter of Acceptance from the college.

Academic requirements

For general diploma programs, international students will need the following, or equivalent:

  • Canada and U.S. – high school diploma and Grade 12 transcript
  • British system – General Certificate of Education with six passes in academic subjects at Ordinary level
  • Caribbean (English) – high school diploma and transcript
  • West Africa – WAEC or NECO transcript, and online verifying scratch number and pin
  • South Asia – high school diploma and Grade 12 transcript

English language requirements

Students will need the minimum following scores, or equivalent:

  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment – 50
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) – 61
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test – 5.5 overall
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) – level 51

Students from South Asia and India may need higher English language scores.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

For this program, students will need to be at least 18 years of age or have graduated from high school.

Campus locations

The main campus is in Windsor, where around 8,000 full-time students study. Campus facilities include the free-to-use SportsPlex. The Chatham campus is small and intimate, with a focus on student community. There is also a downtown campus in Windsor. Each location is close to scenic landscapes such as lakes and rivers, and students can enjoy the area’s long summers.

Accommodation

International students can live on campus and enjoy the benefits that campus living brings. On the Windsor campus, there are 204 two-bedroom suites that are fully furnished. They feature kitchenettes, microwaves and mini fridges so students can make food at home. Other facilities include cable TV, common lounge spaces, security and laundrettes.

Chatham campus housing offers 48 student residences in 12 units, each with four bedrooms, a full kitchen, living area and two bathrooms. Both Windsor and Chatham accommodation options are within walking distance to classrooms. They offer easy ways to meet new people from a variety of different backgrounds.

On-campus facilities

St. Clair College’s campuses are full of amenities for students to take advantage of. This includes many sports and fitness facilities, an extensive library and a wide range of food and drink options. Many social events occur throughout the year from fundraisers to sports games and this is an excellent way for international students to experience true college life.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

The Canadian Academic English Language computer edition (CAEL CE) is the main academic English language test for studying in Canada. It’s accepted by all major institutions that instruct in English.

The CAEL CE system supports international students who wish to study in Canada and provides two scholarships worth CAD 5,000 each. One is awarded to an international student who is already studying in Canada, the other to an international student who currently studies overseas.

To be eligible for the scholarship, international students must have taken the CAEL CE before the given date. To meet the eligibility requirements, students must:

  • Submit the CAEL CE test score for admission to a college or university in Canada, as proof of their English language proficiency
  • Have a test score of 70 or above
  • Complete the essay submission
  • Be admitted to or enrolled at a post-secondary institution in Canada

Eligible students can apply via their online CAEL accounts.
