Archbishop Riordan High School
Founded in 1949, Archbishop Riordan High School is a dynamic school community serving boys in the Catholic Marianist tradition. It is an Archdiocesan Catholic High School, owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco and sponsored by the Society of Mary. The school prepares young men for leadership through its inclusive college preparatory curriculum and emphasizes formation in faith and dedicates itself to community service and justice. In an atmosphere of diversity and a strong family environment, Archbishop Riordan encourages its students to develop individuality through academics, athletics and the arts.
At school’s core is a rigorous and challenging curriculum which blends a classic liberal education with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate contemporary times. Students are trained to think critically, express themselves clearly, and identify overlapping themes among disciplines. Each course identifies the essential questions of each field, emphasizing an inquiry-based approach to subjects, and is designed to hone the elemental academic skills in each student. Students take a hands-on, active approach to their education so that they can apply what they learn to real-life situations.
Its students matriculate to some of the finest universities in the U.S., including Notre Dame, UC Berkeley, Georgetown, UCLA, St. Mary’s College, Johns Hopkins, San Jose State and Davidson. Archbishop Riordan High School also offers 14 Advanced Placement courses to qualified students in the sophomore, junior and senior years.
The school’s athletic department fields one club rugby team and 26 interscholastic teams in 10 sports, which includes baseball, basketball, crosscountry, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. Extracurricular and Campus Ministry activities also play a role in the personal growth of students. Its Visual and Performing Arts Department strives to engage students in productive and analytical arts experiences, offering courses in Drama, Music and the Visual Arts. The students are also encouraged to join as many clubs and activities as possible which are opportunities to cultivate new interests, meet new friends and gain valuable leadership experience.
