Education system in Canada
Canada is amongst the world’s top three best education providers. The education system in Canada comes under the jurisdiction of the provinces and territories as there is no Federal education system and according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Canada spends highest per capita on public post-secondary education. In Canada, public education is free up to secondary school. These are some of the main reasons why so many people chose Canada for their study abroad experience and here is a brief overview of the levels of the Canada Education system.
- Certificate level: Certificate programmes are pursued by students to qualify for the certificate for which they need to take a series of courses on a particular subject. It is a qualification which is awarded upon completion of the programme usually of one year in length. Career goals of those pursuing certificate level courses can be a professional skill enhancement or for learning some technical and vocational fields.
- Diploma level: Diploma programmes are similar to certificate courses, but usually they are one or two years in length. They are one of the most important parts of the education system in Canada. They are usually pursued by students of vocational and technical fields.
- Advanced Diploma level: An advanced diploma is basically the study programme that students require to lead to a Bachelor's Degree. It is usually of three years in length and pursued by a large range of students in Canada education system.
- Bachelor’s Degrees: This part of the education system in Canada is comprised of the study programmes which provide degree certification in any field after successful completion of four to five years of full-time study. These courses are awarded by many University Colleges/ Community Colleges.
- Post Graduate Diplomas / Certificates: After successful completion of a bachelor's degree, many students prefer to go for a post-graduate diploma course which leads them to a Master’s degree. They are not long-term programmes that last 12 to 17 weeks, but they provide opportunities to gain practical as well as theoretical studies. The students should have successfully qualified a bachelor’s degree to pursue a postgraduate diploma.
- Master’s Degree: It is most likely for a bachelor degree graduate who has interest in further learning and research to go for a Master’s degree. In Canada education system, those who want to broaden their career possibilities there are many universities who provide postgraduate programmes.It may vary from two to three years in duration and pursue only after successful completion of a graduate course in a bachelor’s degree in suitable subjects. These programmes may also include training and internships.
- Doctorate or Ph.D: Those bright minds who wish to go for further learning and research after gaining a master’s degree and wants to do specialisation in any field go for a Ph.D. or a doctorate. This is a degree that comes above the master’s degree and generally takes four to seven years to complete. The education system in Canada provides all levels of courses and programmes for every individual, it is up to them how far they want to go.
