Swansea University is renowned for its research reputation, teaching excellence and its unique seafront location. Based in the UK on the south-west coast of Wales, the university was rated as a UK top 30 institution by The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. Established in 1920, the university is currently celebrating its centenary year.

Swansea is a research-led university that prides itself on tackling real world problems, such as infectious diseases and water filtration for third world countries. Swansea was rated among the top 30 research universities in the UK by the Research Excellence Framework, rising from 52nd position in the 2008 rankings to 26th in 2014.

Teaching quality is of the highest of standards at Swansea University, the institution has been awarded a gold rating in the 2018 Teaching Excellence Framework. As well as this award, the city of Swansea has been ranked in the top ten safest places to study in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2020.

Swansea is an international university with students from over 130 countries and has a strong international academic community. The university has two campuses, both set on a beachfront location, comprised of seven academic colleges that offer hundreds of undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees with opportunities to work and study abroad.

The institution has been highly commended for the work of its Employability Academy, which links talented students to graduate recruiters to give them the best chance of getting a job after their degree.

Both campuses are close to the city centre with a variety of restaurants, cafes, museums and other cultural delights to explore.

Department structure

Department structure

Swansea University is comprised of seven colleges offering undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes. The university colleges are:

  • College of Arts and Humanities: Study options include English literature, American studies, applied linguistics, history and creative writing.

  • School of Management: Renowned for finance, management and economic research and education.

  • Hillary Rodham School of Law and Criminology: A leader in the provision of legal education and ranked in the top 300 by the QS World University Rankings.

  • College of Engineering: Offers a variety of programmes and courses including civil, aerospace, electrical, medical, and mechanical engineering as well as sport and exercise science.

  • College of Human and Health Sciences: Covers the subject fields of health, nursing, midwifery, social care, social policy and psychology. The university is the largest provider of healthcare related education in Wales.

  • Swansea University Medical School: Rated as one of the top medical schools in the UK. Offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, ranked 2nd in the UK for overall research quality and number one ranking in the UK for research environment.

  • The College of Science: Biosciences, chemistry, computer science, geography, mathematics and physics are the study options this college offers. The college’s computational foundry supports research in the computational and mathematical sciences.

In addition to the regular course offerings, there are also English language programmes for international students.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Swansea University has country and course specific entry requirements. Requirements can also vary based on the applicant’s previous subject of study. Applicants with qualifications above the stated requirements might be eligible for second year entry.

English language requirement

Undergraduate: Most academic departments require an IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) but there are exceptions.

Postgraduate: Most academic departments ask for an IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) but there are exceptions.

Specific English requirements are listed on each course page under the entry requirements section.

If English scores do not meet requirements, applicants could still be accepted upon completion of the English language pre-sessional programme at Swansea’s English Language Training Services (ELTS).

If the applicant does not hold a Secure English Language Test score, or if they are not a national of a majority English speaking country, they should expect to undertake a short test of English at enrolment. This is done to assess whether the student might benefit from additional free English Language support.

Applicants with a recognised foundation programme from their country or the UK (e.g. INTO, WISC, NCUK) may be eligible for entry on to the first year of a degree at Swansea University. Swansea also offers a foundation programme for applicants who do not meet minimum entry requirements. Nationals of certain countries do not need to provide any English language qualification.

Accommodation, sport and location

Accommodation is guaranteed for all first-year students and Swansea’s housing options have been rated in the top ten most affordable UK universities by totallymoney.com (2019). Students have a choice of different accommodation based on their individual requirements and budget. There is the option of living on-campus or in private residence, with the university’s residential services team on hand to assist students.

Bay Campus Residences

  • Premium en suite rooms, en suite options, twin rooms, single/double bed flats, and wheelchair access rooms.
  • Available for first year and postgraduate students

Singleton Park Campus

  • Offers a range of different sized rooms, including self-catered, en-suite, standard, inclusive and a pre-paid dining card package.
  • Available for first years and postgraduate students

Beck House Residences (off campus)

  • Variety of rooms available including standard, en suite, and couple and family options
  • Accommodation is for PhD, postgraduate and medical students

Hendrefoelan Student Village Residences (off campus)

  • Has standard rooms with shared kitchen.
  • Available for first year, medical and postgraduate students.

Sports

Sport plays an integral part in the life of the university and is crucial element of the student experience. The university's Sports Village complex caters to students with different interests and includes some impressive facilities.

The City

Both university campuses have beach front locations perfect for summer barbecues and winter walks. As well as a variety of beaches which surround Swansea, the city centre is a short bus ride and is also accessible by walking or cycling so you are not far from shops or restaurants. Swansea has plenty of charm and lots of character with a variety of art galleries and museums. The city also has Santander Cycles which provide 55 bikes based at six hubs along the city’s main cycle route for students to hire and use.

Scholarships and funding

Scholarships and funding

Swansea University offers a variety scholarships for international students. The International Development Office awards Excellence Scholarships of up to GBP 6,000 for undergraduate study and up to GBP 4,000 for postgraduate study.

Postgraduate and Undergraduate Scholarships

Students can apply for the International Excellence scholarship. Successful applicants will receive a discount in tuition fees, however this cannot be used in place of a deposit.

Eira Davies Scholarship

Female students who are residents of select developing countries and are admitted to master’s postgraduate courses within the College of Human and Health Sciences can apply for the scholarship. This is a full tuition fee scholarship, and students demonstrating academic excellence and evidence of financial need are eligible to apply.

Chevening Scholarships

Swansea University is proud to be a partner University of the Chevening Scholarship Commission and welcomes a number of Chevening Scholarship holders to the university each year.

Sports Scholarships

The scheme covers an enormous spectrum of talent in individual and team sports. Students must not only satisfy the normal academic requirements for admission, but also demonstrate outstanding ability in whatever sporting sphere they have made their specialty.

Music Scholarships

The Music Entrance Scholarships are designed to enable talented musicians to continue to develop their skill and musicianship in a supportive environment.

Several federal and private student loans are also available to U.S. and Canadian applicants.

Student support and safety

Swansea University students have access to different kinds of support and the university is known for its outstanding student services team.

International@CampusLife is the student support team that provides information and advice on non-academic matters free of charge. This includes immigration advice and services, advice on working in the UK and is available to all international students.

Student Union acts as a bridge between the university and international students and seeks to ensure student integration into Swansea life. As one of the UK's largest students' unions, it organises a variety of social activities for international students.

The Centre for Academic Success offers academic skills classes and confidential one-to-one appointments in all academic disciplines. The centre’s team of specialist tutors also support students with specific learning differences.

Academic Success Programme (ASP) assists students at the university through courses in academic writing, critical thinking and presentation skills. The courses and tutorials are designed to help students gain confidence and progress in their academic pursuits.

Swansea offers a wellbeing service that reaches out to students using therapeutic approaches and by providing tailored learning support. Services are free of charge and confidential.

The university is committed to providing a safe, secure learning and social environment for its students. The university has a friendly team of security professionals that provides a 24/7 security service across both campuses. The dedicated team are trained to provide a first response service including first aid. There is also a safety app for students called Safezone which offers round-the-clock safety reassurance.

The University Council bears the ultimate responsibility for the health, safety, welfare and wellbeing of students. The university has a clear risk management policy that lists roles and responsibilities for managing safety.
