Overview

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) is one of the largest institutes of technology in New Zealand and is a high-quality government tertiary education institution. MIT received a Category One rating in the most recent evaluation by NZQA in 2016, which is the highest possible rating.

MIT has a number of schools which provide international students with a wide range of globally recognised certificate, degree, graduate diploma and post-graduate level qualifications. The subject areas include business, digital technologies, nursing, engineering, and education.

Through its small class sizes, excellent technologies and facilities, MIT offers a teaching experience that is personalised and delivers industry-specific experience and skills. Many of the programmes offered at MIT include student projects which are structured with innovative businesses.

MIT provides foundation programmes to help students prepare for their study at the tertiary level, as well as English language programmes, if they require assistance to meet the English language entry requirements.

The institute has four campuses across Auckland, a city that is frequently ranked as one of the most livable places in the world. Students can head out of their campuses during their studies and explore the bush-clad mountain ranges, beautiful beaches, and the latest theatre, art, and music.

Manukau Institute of Technology's recent award nominations

Manukau Institute of Technology was recently picked as a finalist by Westpac Auckland Business Awards in two categories, namely Best Customer Service Delivery and Employer of the Year for the South and East regions.

Gus Gilmore, its chief executive said, ''We are delighted to have made the high-quality list of finalists. It's a great acknowledgement of hard work, innovation and challenging established ways of thinking for the benefit of students and staff.''

MIT redesigned its customer service experience completely through its Project Reretahi, which became a key reason for its award entry. Inclusion and diversity were strong themes in the institute's successful entry for the category, Employer of the Year. Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Students need to meet academic and English language entry requirements to be eligible for admission to MIT.

MIT English language requirements

MIT graduate diplomas and degrees need IELTS Academic overall score of 6.0 , with no component score lower than 5.5 or its equivalent. Certificates need IELTS 5.5 (Academic) as a minimum or equivalent. For postgraduate and master, students need IELTS Academic over all score of 6.5 with no component score lower than 6.0 or its equivalent. Some study options that lead to professional registration require IELTS Academic score of 6.5 or 7.0.

NZ academic qualification equivalents

  • International Baccalaureate 24+ (or)
  • Cambridge International Examination (CIE) 120 points on UCAS tariff

Some courses may have higher requirements and MIT may consider admissions for students on a case-by-case basis for those who have not met the requirements as well.

Post application, MIT will get back to students asking for more information if needed or will let students know if the application is successful. MIT will send students an offer letter and an acceptance form if the application is successful.

This will be students' first point of contact for enquiries about study options through a team of experienced advisers.

Student safety

MIT has an on-campus security service for the safety of its students.

On campus

Security for students is provided by a team of campus security officers. Some security services offered are:

  • Campus patrols (day and night)
  • Timely response to emergency calls
  • Security during peak hours
  • Security cameras and alarms throughout campus
  • Officers to walk with students after-hours to parking areas
  • Access cards
  • Safety classes

MIT campuses have emergency phones strategically located to help support students if needed. Student calls will be connected to the security control room where a security officer will assist them. 24/7 patrols are also conducted by campus security.

MIT Otara IYA

MIT's main campus is located at the heart of South Auckland, known for its cultural diversity and vibrant communities. Students have access to wide open and green spaces and purpose-built learning and support facilities. It is home to Nga Kete Wananga Marae and the Pasifika Community Centre.

MIT Manakau

This purpose-built campus is based in the heart of Manukau and covers subject areas including digital technologies, business, nursing, health and counselling. It is home to many specialist spaces, project spaces, and labs.

MIT Techpark

MIT Techpark, based in South Auckland, is a new centre of excellence focusing on engineering and trades education. This purpose-built facility is home to the latest technology and innovations.

New Zealand Maritime School - City Campus

Classrooms of this campus overlook the busiest and biggest commercial port in New Zealand and the city's waterfront. The school helps students get hands-on experience before they commence the sea time component of their study.

Established in 1970, Manukau Institute of Technology is a leader in technical and vocational education. It is rated a Category One educational provider by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. The institute offers entry level certificates, diplomas, degrees, graduate diplomas and ESOL English language and study preparation programmes.

Manukau Institute of Technology offers a wide range of academic programmes and is one of New Zealand?s largest, high quality institutes of technology. MIT's support services for international students include health and counselling support, pastoral care, learning support and student mentorship.
