The University can trace its origins to-the School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834 and Armstrong College, founded in 1871 for the teaching of physical sciences. These two colleges formed one division of the federal University of Durham. The Durham Colleges formed the other division. The Newcastle Colleges merged to form King's College in 1937. In 1963, when the federal University was dissolved, King's College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. The University changed its trading name to Newcastle University in 2006.
Newcastle University is an internationally recognised university with global geographic reach. The university is in the top 100 most international universities in the world and have campuses in Newcastle, London, Singapore and Malaysia. Newcastle University is the first UK University to establish a fully owned international branch campus for medicine at its NUMed Campus in Malaysia. The university has over 6,000 International students from more than 120 countries. The university offers over 200 undergraduate degrees, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research degrees. Students need a good level of English language to study at Newcastle University. English will be the main language they use socially and for study. If English is not first language students will need to provide a recognised English language test or qualification. The university offers scholarships to their undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Many large companies target their internships at undergraduate students in their second, or penultimate, year of study. About a third of their graduate positions are filled by students who have completed an internship or placement year with them. Some internships are also open to graduates. The Careers Service organises a range of internships, and are available during term-time and in the summer. Newcastle University's award-winning Careers Service can provide a range of services to help students progress along their career path. Regular events both on campus and in London can also help students pursue their chosen career.
The university’s main teaching and research activities take place in the heart of Newcastle in the north east of England at the-Newcastle city centre campus, Campus for Ageing and Vitality and Newcastle International Centre for Life. Its newest UK campus, Newcastle University London, opened in September 2015. The campus is located in the City of London offers Newcastle University degrees designed by their triple-accredited Business School, as well as a range of university preparation programmes.
