Ulster University is Northern Ireland's largest university, and is spread across four campuses in Belfast, Coleraine, Magee and Jordanstown. The university also has an additional two sites in London and Birmingham, and offers a wide range of courses, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, short courses and research programmes. There is also the option to study online via distance learning.

The university has one of the highest graduate employment rates in the UK, with 94% of graduates in work or further study six months after leaving the university (DHLE Survey 2016/2017). The majority of courses offered at Ulster University are professionally accredited, while students also have the chance to gain industry experience during their time studying by undertaking a work placement. The university has an award-winning Career Development Centre (CDC), which is found at each campus, that offers additional help and support in everything from writing a CV to practicing interview questions.

Students receive plenty of support during their time studying at Ulster University. These support services include a confidential counselling team, a dedicated service for students with a disability, financial advice, a chaplaincy and a dedicated centre for overseas students.

The Students' Union runs a wide range of clubs and societies for students to get involved with outside of the classroom. These include everything from sports teams to drama lessons, as well as volunteering opportunities.

Students from all around the world come to study at Ulster University and it is very proud of its international population, made up of students from over 100 different countries. There is also the opportunity for home students to spend part of their course in another country, with programmes including Erasmus.

What's new

Ulster University has a new GBP 250 million campus in Belfast city centre, one of the largest higher education builds in Europe. Facilities at this campus will provide a progressive learning, teaching and research environment with the best technology.

The vibrant campus, popular for art, hosts frequent fashion shows and art exhibitions making it an exciting place to study and work. The university also offers brand new, high-quality accommodation in the city centre beside the new campus.

New teaching facility

Ulster University recently opened a new GBP 11 million teaching block at its Magee campus. The development represents a major investment by the university in a world-class teaching space.

The facility has state-of-the-art facilities and impressive teaching spaces. The four-storey facility, spanning 4,000 square metres, includes three lecture theatres, 20 teaching rooms, student hubs and a cafe.

New courses

Ulster University will be offering the following new master's programmes from January 2020:

  • MSc Data Science with Applied Research
  • MBA with Advanced Practice
  • MSc Marketing with Advanced Practice
  • MSc International Business with Advanced Practice
  • MSc Management with Advanced Practice

Strategic partnership

Ulster University recently announced that the Chinese Ministry of Education has granted approval for the establishment of the Ulster College at Shaanxi University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Shaanxi Province.

The courses to be delivered at SUST centre around Mechanical Engineering, Technology with Design, and Computer Science. Students from Ulster College will be able to study at Ulster for either one or two years of their programme, adding to the diversity of the student population. It is anticipated that there will also be opportunities for Ulster students to spend time studying at SUST.

Department structure

Ulster University offers a variety of courses through its four faculties:

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

A research-intensive faculty, consisting of world leading researchers, delivers courses and research in a wide variety of arts and humanities disciplines. The faculty places strong emphasis on professional accreditation, work-based learning and employability.

The faculty is noted for the following:

  • 1st in the UK for impact of research in Law (REF 2014).
  • 3rd in the UK for Art & Design Research (REF 2014).

Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment

Comprising of four schools, the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment offers industry-informed, professionally recognised courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The faculty is known for its strong industry partnerships in both research and teaching, bringing excellent employment opportunities for its graduates. Most courses have a placement year, and graduates gain an additional diploma that helps them find professional placements.

Life and Health Sciences

The faculty is a leading provider of health-related education, with nearly 6,500 students and offers a wide range of accredited degree and research programmes covering seven disciplines.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

English language requirements

If English is not the applicant's first language, they must be able to demonstrate that their English language competency is of a standard suitable for succeeding in the chosen course of study. Applicants will be required to provide an English language proficiency test, which must be no more than two years old by the time of commencing studies.

Most courses require the following:

  • A minimum of IELTS 6.0 (with no contributing band less than 5.5).
  • If the applicant's English language proficiency does not meet requirements, the Centre for English Language Teaching offers a range of English language courses, which are designed to prepare international students with the necessary language skills for academic study at Ulster University.
  • Ulster has its own internal online English test. Ulster's Admissions Team can arrange this for students for free when they apply.

Undergraduate programmes

Students can apply directly for free online or via UCAS. If applying directly, they will receive an offer within 48 hours.

Postgraduate programmes

Students can apply directly online.

As part of the online application, applicants are required to upload key documentation including transcripts from university-level study and a personal statement. Ulster does not charge an application fee.

University funded scholarships

  • A scholarship of GBP 2,000 is awarded to all international undergraduate and postgraduate students. This is designed by Ulster to support students in their studies.
  • Ulster also provides an extensive range of accommodation and regional scholarships each year.

Undergraduate scholarships

The Barnett Pharmaceutical Sciences Scholarship

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers the Barnett Pharmaceutical Sciences Scholarship for students with a confirmed conditional offer to the MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences programme. The scholarship will be used to cover the full amount of the scholars' tuition fees with any remaining funds being paid directly to the scholar in support of living expenses.

Postgraduate scholarships

International postgraduate scholarships are awarded to qualifying students paying full fees.

Bursaries are available for students who qualify.
