Teaching Quality

The University of Salford has a strong reputation for excellence in teaching and research that not only benefits its students but also its local community.

  • The University of Salford has risen 25 places from 109 to 84 in the Guardian’s University Guide 2013, this is the fourth biggest rise across all UK universities.
  • The Quality in Higher Education journal rated Salford in the top ten for teaching out of all UK universities.
  • The University scored an impressive 82% satisfaction rating for teaching standards in the Guardian University guide, 2013.
  • Many tutors at Salford are industry consultants, ensuring that the Universities curriculum meets the need of the modern workplace.
  • Several of the courses at Salford have been accredited by external professional bodies, such as the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, British Psychological Society and Royal Aeronautical Society, all of which are internationally recognised.

Research Quality

Research is at the heart of teaching at the University of Salford and students are able to learn about world-leading research as it takes place.

  • In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the University of Salford was placed in the top third of UK universities for research in terms of Research Power.
  • 83% of research submitted by the University was rated ‘internationally recognised’ and 43% as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the RAE (2008).
  • The University of Salford has built its research reputation on work that is practical and relevant, including the areas of crime prevention, financial support for low-income communities and improving food hygiene.
  • The University has established a close link between research and business, for example, the Universities media department works closely with the BBC as part of its MediaCityUK partnership.

 

International

Courses at the University of Salford are tailored to incorporate workplace skills and academic learning.

  • The University offers a range of International Scholarships for high achieving students; over the last few years the university have awarded over £1.5 million in scholarships to international students.
  • International students are offered additional support before their course begins through pre-sessional Summer English Courses which are held at the University.
  • Salford also has International educational consultants to advise international students on visas, applications and choosing the right course at Salford.
  • The University is home to more than 3,000 International students from over 100 different countries.

 

Student Satisfaction

The University of Salford is constantly improving its campus and learning facilities in order to improve students’ university experience.

  • In the most recent National Student Survey, 79% of students were satisfied with the overall quality of their course at Salford.
  • The Universities ‘Campus Plan’ seeks to improve the environment of the University for staff, students, businesses and local people, the plan includes the delivery of a new student residences, the construction of a new Arts Building and more.

  • Salford has developed degree programmes in partnership with the help of employers to make them more focused on work-based skills and to give Salford students a competitive edge over the market.
  • 87% of students at the University have a job or are undergoing further study 6 months after graduation (National Student Survey, 2012).
  • 74% of undergraduate programmes at the University of Salford offer a work placement year either in the UK or overseas, offering students the chance to gain a unique and invaluable edge over the job market.
  • The university’s Careers Office is available to provide students with free advice and support during their studies and for up to three years after graduation.
  • The University has developed a ‘Salford Student Life Award’ scheme that helps students to enhance their employability, enterprise and personal development, therefore improving their job prospects following graduation.

Variety of Courses

The University of Salford is at the cutting edge of the blended learning approach and combines traditional learning methods with online study and workplace learning.

  • Salford is home to three academic Colleges: the College of Arts and Social Sciences, College of Health and Social Care and the College of Science and Technology. Each college is home to several specialist schools of study, providing a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research courses.
  • The newly opened MediaCityUK makes the University of Salford a unique place to learn, allowing students to study in a public space alongside members of the BBC and other media professionals.
  • Salford was one of the first universities to offer ‘sandwich’ degrees with extended work placements. All programmes are strongly linked to the world of work and allow students to gain applied knowledge in their chosen area of study.
  • Students are taught in a variety of ways, such as lectures, seminars, field trips, virtual learning environments and laboratory lessons.

 

Campus Facilities

Location

The University of Salford is located just one and a half miles from one of the UK’s largest cities, Manchester. Over the past 100 years, the University has been at the centre of technological, scientific and engineering developments that have shaped the world. The University continues to invest in its development and improve campus facilities, including 2011’s MediaCityUK, which has received £500 million of funding alone.

The city of Manchester is one of the biggest and most vibrant cities in the UK. Manchester is full of tourist attractions, history and entertainment and is home over 70,000 students in total. The city is home to two world-famous football clubs and has some of the best shopping in the UK. As well as this, Manchester is close to the beautiful scenery of the Peak District, Lake District and Snowdonia National Parks. The city hosts an international airport and is well linked to the rest of the UK through train links as well as bus and coach routes.
