Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things

Set within the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, Northeastern recently launched the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things. The Institute brings together a wide range of expertise in different areas of communication, networking, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and more.

Director of the Institute, Tommaso Melodia, who is also Northeastern's William Lincoln Smith Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, said that over 100 of Northeastern's top researchers will collaborate with each other and different universities, industries and government organizations to change the way people around the world are connected.

Other areas of pioneering research

  • Mona Minkara, assistant professor of Bioengineering, studies how vaping affects lung function and the potential for better treatments for diseases such as respiratory distress syndrome.
  • Daniel T. O'Brien, associate professor in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs and the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, leads a team of researchers who are studying how algorithms can create more efficient public transit.
  • Neel Joshi, associate professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, was selected as a grand prize winner in the National Science Foundation's 2026 Idea Machine competition. His research focuses on using bacteria to build things and training cells to build materials that could replace plastics or be used in medical treatments.
  • Northeastern alumnus Lisa Oakley, BS Computer Science/Mathematics 2018, has recently won an award for cybersecurity research for her techniques in game theory and AI.

Experiential learning

Northeastern is a world leader in experiential learning. This method combines theoretical knowledge, research, and practical application. Graduate students, from master's through to doctorate programs, and in professional and certificate programs, put knowledge to work at Fortune 500 and start-up companies, universities, government agencies, non-profits, and global organizations.

Flexible experiential learning allows students to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to

real-world challenges while working alongside experienced industry professionals. Students further develop their skills and knowledge when they return to the classroom after their co-op placements. They then discover how to use theory, research, and practical application together to be innovative in their work.

Some of the world's most influential academics call Northeastern home. They are attracted by the

interdisciplinary collaboration and increased focus, passion, and knowledge that students bring to the classroom. More than 500 tenured and tenure-track faculty members have been appointed in the past five years and the number of external awards for faculty research has largely increased because of this.

Students have numerous opportunities to work hand-in-hand with faculty members to pursue research in cutting-edge fields such as nanotechnology, network science, biotechnology, and urban public policy. They also have access to the latest developments in their areas of study and get the support and mentorship they need to succeed.

It's the best of both worlds, big opportunities at a large research powerhouse, and small, intimate research and classroom settings. Research opportunities are also offered outside of the university through the experiential learning programs with research partners around the globe.

Students can earn academic credits toward their degree programs and upon successful completion of the program and progression requirements can enter their degree program.

''I enjoyed the speaking lectures and the opportunity to practice presenting in English. It helped me become comfortable making presentations once I started my master's degree.'' Chao Xu, MS Analytics, 2020

Waiving the English Proficiency Requirement

If, prior to enrolling at Northeastern, students have completed four consecutive years in a high school or university where academic English was the language of instruction for all courses (excluding foreign language acquisition courses), they may be eligible for a waiver.
