The University of South Wales (USW) is one of the biggest universities in the UK with 30,000 enrolled students. With three campuses in and near the capital of Wales, Cardiff.

The university is renowned for its partnerships with major employers, one of the reasons why 95 percent of its students are in employment or further study within six months of graduating. It uses these employer connections to run a series of public lectures featuring some of the leading figures in business and politics.

Courses across USW have been created with advice and guidance from professional bodies and leading businesses, to leave graduates from the institution in the best possible position to get a job once they have finished their qualification. USW graduates have gone on to work for companies such as Sony, the BBC, the NHS, and British Airways.

With a scholarship worth up to GBP 2,500, USW's MBA Global programme is a unique two-year MBA, which offers students the opportunity to gain up to ten months' worth of work-experience in the UK.

The MBA Global offers specialist pathways in finance, HRM, supply chain management, marketing and entrepreneurship. It aims to help managers and leaders solve complex business problems while developing professionals who will make a difference in organisations.

MSc Strategic Procurement Management

The specialist MSc Strategic Procurement Management degree offers high-level strategic teaching in all areas of this growing field. In an increasingly competitive environment, purchasing and supply chain managers need to develop and demonstrate a variety of key competencies.

USW graduates have the specialist knowledge to co-ordinate and adapt their purchasing and supply chain activities and respond to the dynamic needs of a modern business.

The MSc Strategic Procurement Management course is accredited by the leading professional body, the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, meaning the course is highly regarded by employers and equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the industry.

Students with relevant professional qualifications and three to five years' industry experience may be eligible for exemptions to fast track their studies and students will only be required to study specific modules.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

When it comes to working with industry, USW has an excellent reputation. Many of its courses are developed with the professional bodies and leading organisations that employ its graduates, from local government and the NHS to many of the world's major corporations. Its courses are designed to increase the skills and employability of its students. This is recognised in the university's partnerships with key companies in growth sectors across the globe.

In aerospace, the university is the only university in the UK that has integrated the industry-standard aircraft maintenance qualification 'EASA Part 66' with an honour's degree, delivered on a single campus.

Students have the option to arrange and undertake practical training all over the world with any university-approved Part 145 Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) organisation.

Department structure

USW has three campuses, in Cardiff, Newport, and Portypridd. There are three faculties and a number of courses that students can study.

Faculty of Life Sciences and Education

The Faculty of Life Sciences and Education offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in specialist subjects including social care nursing working with children and families creative and therapeutic arts psychology professional policing community health studies and health and social care management.

Faculty of Creative Industries

The Faculty of Creative Industries offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in specialist subjects including advertising design fashion design documentary photography computer animation game art music business and visual production.

The South Wales Business School offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in specialist subjects including accounting and finance event management international business and management public services and law.

USW's MBA Global programme is a unique two-year MBA that offers students the opportunity to gain up to ten months' worth of work-experience in the UK.

Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science

The Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in specialist subjects including aeronautical engineering computer forensics forensic science maths mechanical engineering quantity surveying sound and live event production and pharmaceutical science.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

English Language Entry Requirements

Proficiency in the English language is essential and the university recognises the following English language qualifications:

  • GCSE pass in English at Grade C or above
  • IELTS with an average overall score of 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each component for undergraduate and most postgraduate study.
  • TOEFL IBT minimum score of 80 IBT for undergraduate and most postgraduate courses
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): exams taken from January 2015 – overall score of 169 with at least 162 in each component for undergraduate and most postgraduate study. Exams taken before January 2015 – Grade C and no less than borderline in each skill for undergraduate and postgraduate.
  • Trinity College English Language qualifications: ISE II Distinction or ISE III Pass for undergraduate and most postgraduate courses.
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum of 51 points in each element for the majority of undergraduate programmes and for the majority of postgraduate programmes.

Students who do not meet these requirements must look into a number of courses to prepare themselves for academic studies.

International Scholarships

The University of South Wales offers a range of generous scholarships for self-funding international students. Students will be automatically considered for one of these awards when the university receives a student application. Students do not need to make a separate application and confirmation of the scholarship will be included in their offer letter. All scholarships are applied to every year of study at the university. Some of the scholarships on offer at the university include:

  • International Scholarships worth up to GBP 2,500 are available for students who are self-funding their studies.
  • Undergraduate courses (including top-ups): up to GBP 1,500
  • BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Top-Up standard scholarship for 180 credit: GBP 2,250
  • Postgraduate scholarships up to GBP 2,000

Chancellor's International Development Scholarship

Undergraduate and postgraduate students from the following regions are eligible for a scholarship of GBP 2,500:

  • Africa
  • Latin America
  • South Asia
  • South East Asia
  • Central Asia
  • Caribbean

Scholarships and discounts do not apply to sponsored students or those studying a placement year or English Language programmes.

The university has two main campuses.

Pontypridd Campus

From listed buildings to new, modern structures, The Pontypridd campus reflects the university's history and its ambitions. The campus is divided into two sites: USW Treforest and USW Glyntaff and students will find everything they need including halls of residence, the library and sport centre, and cafes and bars.

Cardiff Campus

USW Cardiff is in the city centre, putting student life at the heart of the capital of Wales, great for students in creative industry courses with specialist facilities across campus for students to perfect and learn creative skills in a professional environment. Cardiff is a major centre for media production in the UK, and the city centre will soon to be home to the BBC in addition to the established Pinewood Studios.

USW Sport Park

The USW Sport Park is one of the best university sports coaching and training venues in the country. Many professional teams use the USW Sport Park for training, such as the Wales football team, Cardiff City Football Club, as well as touring rugby squads, including the New Zealand All Blacks, South African Springboks and Australian Wallabies.

Facilities include a new full-size indoor 3G pitch, built to the FIFA Pro and World Rugby 22 standard and a specialist centre for strength and conditioning. Along with a notational analysis suite, more than 30 acres of playing fields with five floodlit pitches, as well as a full-size FIFA-approved outdoor 3G pitch.


For students studying at Cardiff, USW work with a private provider to offer rooms in their Halls of Residence. These en suite rooms are right in the city centre directly opposite the USW Cardiff campus. For students studying at City Campus, Newport, the university has teamed up with a private provider to offer modern halls of residence overlooking the River Usk and a five-minute walk from the university, local supermarkets and the city centre nightlife.
