Overview

Currently ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world by QS World University Rankings, the University of Newcastle, Australia is an extremely welcoming place for international students.

With campuses in Newcastle (Callaghan and City), the Central Coast, Sydney, and Singapore, more than 105 nationalities are represented in the student body. There are over 39,000 students at the university, with over 6,000 of those being international.

The university's three colleges and 20 schools offer students a choice of more than 180 undergraduate and postgraduate programs across a wide variety of subject areas. This includes education and arts, business and law, science, engineering, as well as health and medicine. The QS World University Rankings placed 15 of Newcastle's subjects within the top 200 in the world.

Ranked as the top university in Australia for industry collaboration (Innovations Connections IC Report 2004-2020), the university has also placed 12th in the world in the latest Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

Throughout their studies, international students are supported by a dedicated team who aid with orientation, scholarships, English-language support and finding employment.

What's new

Rankings

Newcastle was recently named as the number one worldwide institution for partnering and working towards a more sustainable future (Times Higher Education Impact 2021).

Assessed against 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the overall aim is to end poverty, protect the planet and create peace and prosperity. The University of Newcastle has an overall impact ranking of 12th in the world, up 33 places from the 2020 ranking and places 1st in the SDG for partnerships.

In addition to this, the latest QS World University Rankings placed 15 of Newcastle's subjects in the top 200 in the world, and 14 subjects in the top 10 in Australia.

New campus

The New South Wales government has fast-tracked the construction of an AUD 25 million Honeysuckle City Campus for the university.

When completed, the new campus will give students access to leading academics in communication, media, film and television, events production, sound and music, animation and creative art disciplines in state-of-the-art classrooms and studios.

Teaching quality

The University of Newcastle has a strong reputation for the high quality of its teaching and learning.

It is implementing new teaching technology in several areas to deepen students' understanding of topics. The university is committed to providing practical and hands-on experience to help prepare students for life after graduation.

Integrated practical experience, otherwise known as Work Integrated Learning, is embedded into all of the degrees at Newcastle. This equips students with real, hands-on experiences through its network of well-respected industry partners. Examples include participating in a clinical or professional work placement, internship, or project-based learning.

Department structure

Department structure

The University of Newcastle is divided into three colleges, and 20 schools. Its colleges are:

College of Engineering, Science and Environment

Bringing together expertise in engineering, environment and the sciences, the school aims to create graduates who are ready for life and careers and provide transformative solutions to both the region and the wider world. The degree programs from this college are designed around industry best practice. There are six schools in the college:

  • School of Architecture and Built Environment
  • School of Engineering
  • School of Environmental and Life Sciences
  • School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
  • School of Psychology
  • School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing

Newly named but with a long history of globally significant research, this college has a pioneering approach to education. The college's main aim is to deliver the highest quality health care practitioners and researchers. The schools in this college are:

  • School of Medicine and Public Health
  • School of Nursing and Midwifery

College of Human and Social Futures

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

All applicants for the University of Newcastle are required to demonstrate English language proficiency. All courses require an equivalent of IELTS minimum level 6, with some requiring a higher overall score depending on the nature of the program.

For students who do not already hold the relevant qualifications, the university offers a wide range of intensive English language programs. Currently, these courses are being offered online via the virtual classroom, so they can be taken remotely.

The university's English Language Centre has been in operation since 1989 and is the recipient of multiple awards. It has campuses in both Newcastle and Sydney, delivering English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Student for both academic and general purposes. It has been ranked in the top seven in Australia (English Language Training Barometer 2019/20) for overall satisfaction, and 197th in the world (QS World University Rankings 2021). These courses are taught by experienced and highly qualified teachers.

Facilities

Across its five campuses, Newcastle boasts a wide range of facilities. Over the last few years, more than AUD 100 million has been invested into the Newcastle city campus.

At the Callaghan campus, students will find a mix of award-winning buildings set across 140 hectares of natural environment.

The Newcastle City campus is in the city centre and features a state-of-the-art facility called NuSpace which is designed to deliver a next-generation university experience. It boasts digital library services, collaborative research and learning spaces as well as several social areas.

Based on the 2014-2020 Innovation Connections ICA Report the university is the top-ranked university for industry collaboration in Australia. The university is also the only university in Newcastle and the Hunter region which means industry partners often recruit the university's graduating students, recognising their strength and readiness for the workplace.

The innovation hub is also found here, where students can engage with entrepreneurs, innovators, start-ups, and developers.

Situated in the middle of Sydney's central business district, the Sydney campus offers world-class facilities to provide innovative styles of learning. This campus offers a range of English Language programs and postgraduate study options. The courses here have been developed alongside industry professionals to include applied learning.

The Central Coast campuses sits halfway between Newcastle and Sydney. Here, students benefit from strong links to industry as well as links with the Central Coast Local Health District which brings with it world-class research and testing facilities.

Finally, the Singapore campus is in the central business district of one of Asia's best educational hubs.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

There is a variety of different scholarships available at the University of Newcastle, several of which can be received by international students. Some examples include:

Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies

52 scholarships available of AUD 10,000 via the academic faculties. No application is required for this scholarship, as it is automatically based on final grades after the end of the second semester.

Golden Jubilee Commemorative International Scholarship

Offering a full fee waiver for the duration of a full-time undergraduate program (AUD 140,000), two of these scholarships are available. It supports academically gifted international students who enrol in engineering, built environment or technology degrees.

Global Leaders Scholarship

Available to students from Africa, Latin America, Middle East, South Asia, and South East Asia, 50 of these AUD 10,000 scholarships are available. They will be automatically awarded to students and are assessed at the same time as the application to study business or law degrees.

India International Excellence Scholarship

Indian students with a strong academic background could be eligible to receive the International Excellence Scholarship valued at up to AUD 15,000.

The University of Newcastle offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees. An undergraduate, or Bachelor's degree, is usually students first degree at university and their pathway into their future career. Students will have access to world-class researchers and teachers, purpose-built facilities and first-rate student support. Postgraduate study gives students the edge when it comes to advancing or changing their career. The university provides complete flexibility in their program, and they can study anything from a single subject to an entire degree from online, face-to-face, or do a bit of both options. A research degree provides a unique opportunity to follow a specific interest, in a particular area of research.
