Sheffield Hallam University is ranked among the top five modern universities in the UK for research, and the institution prides itself on creating job-ready graduates who are leaders in their fields.

Every course at Sheffield Hallam has a career advisor for students, meaning that they all get the individualised attention they need to get straight into employment after graduation. In fact, Sheffield Hallam has a 95 per cent student satisfaction rating for careers advice (Life@Sheffield Hallam Survey 2018).

Teaching quality at Sheffield Hallam is of a high standard and the university has been awarded the University of the Year for Teaching Quality in The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020 edition. They have also achieved five stars in the QS Star rating, with top marks in the categories of teaching, employability, facilities, innovation and inclusiveness.

Sheffield Hallam have invested over GBP 100 million in new facilities in the last five years. There are 24-hour libraries, student-designed study areas, and opportunities to learn on industry standard equipment.

International Foundation Programme

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is designed to support international and EU (non-UK) students meet the academic and English language entry qualifications required for undergraduate degrees. On successful completion, students qualify to progress onto a choice of more than 60 undergraduate degree programmes.

Sheffield Hallam offers three separate programme routes:

  • Art, Design and Media
  • Business, Law and Social Sciences
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)

The course is designed to provide different entry points based on current English language level. There is a three-term programme starting in September and a two-term programme starting in January.

Scholarships & awards

Sheffield Hallam offers competitive scholarships and awards for international fee paying and non-UK students.

Automatic awards

These include a series of GBP 3,000 Vice Chancellor's Awards and scholarships towards postgraduate tuition fees for eligible Sheffield Hallam graduates.

Scholarships

Transform Together Scholarships: Open to international and non-UK applicants for all full-time taught courses at Sheffield Hallam University. A half fee waiver (50% discount) is available for postgraduate courses and for each year of an undergraduate degree. Students who can demonstrate excellent academic achievement are eligible.

Students can also explore the General Chevening scholarship scheme and the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSSS) and Performance Athlete Support Programme. There are also Study Abroad scholarships for international and EU students.

English language requirements

All applicants should have a recognised English language qualification before entering any of the courses at Sheffield Hallam.

For degree level programmes (bachelors, masters and PhD), a wide range of international qualifications are considered.

International foundation programme

Applicants to the International Foundation Programme in Art, Design and Media or Business, Law and Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths must have the following qualifications:

  • IELTS certificate from an approved centre
  • Good high school graduation grades which include maths

Undergraduate programmes

  • Two General Certificate of Education (GCE) or Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) A level passes
  • High school leaving certificate, which is recognised as equivalent to A level standard
  • Other international qualifications gained after 13 years of secondary/further education
  • The International Baccalaureate Diploma with 28 points or more

Pre-masters programme (graduate certificate)

  • Diplomas awarded after a minimum of two years study upon completion of a secondary education
  • Students holding a degree in a subject considered unsuitable for direct entry to a masters programme - 'conversion' students

Postgraduate taught programmes (masters)

  • A first degree or professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to degree standard
  • A Higher National Diploma (HND) or higher education diploma with substantial work experience in an appropriate field
  • Successful completion of a recognised pre-masters course

Postgraduate research programmes

MPhil or PhD masters degree from a recognised university.

Facilities

Facilities

Sheffield Hallam University is based across two main campuses - City Campus in the middle of the city centre and Collegiate Campus in the leafy student district of Ecclesall Road.

Sheffield Hallam is constantly updating and adding to the facilities students use. Facilities include 24-hour libraries, student-designed study areas, and equipment students will encounter in their future work area in the context of their subject specialisation.

Accommodation options include university halls and private sector housing. Sheffield Hallam guarantees accommodation for all first-year students. University halls are great if students want to make friends and live in the heart of student life. Residents are never more than a half hour walk away from campus and students can choose from over 30 halls in all sizes and prices. Rent includes bills, insurance and Wi-Fi.

Sheffield Hallam helps students identify private accommodation, which includes homestays and shared houses. Eating options cover cafes, restaurants and supermarkets where students will find a vast range of options from Chinese to Polish food - for many more choices in world cuisine head to Moor Market and London Road.

Almost every building on the campuses have places to eat and drink providing quality and varied food at reasonable prices.

The university invests GBP 4 million a year into its IT facilities. High quality sports and fitness facilities are also available to students.

Student support

Student support

Students at Sheffield Hallam have access to a variety of support services.

The International Experience Team is a dedicated support team that assists international students through pre-arrival support to graduation. Services include study and welfare support, immigration advice, careers and employability advice, counselling and the university English scheme.

Other services at the university include the international alumni network, Hallam Union advice centre that offers advice on accommodation, immigration and other issues, financial support and guidance, research and innovation office and Student Engagement, Evaluation and Research (STEER).

Business start-up services are available to all current students and alumni up to five years after graduation. The Students' Union manages a large number of clubs, societies and other services.

Graduate outcomes

Sheffield Hallam students enjoy a high level of employability following graduation. The Careers and Employability Centre helps students get work-ready skills and provides expert advice on planning a future career. The service helps students find part-time jobs, become self-employed and gain work experience. Sheffield Hallam's careers service has a 95% student satisfaction rating (Life@Sheffield Hallam Survey 2018). Advisors regularly run job seeking sessions to help improve student's CVs, write job applications and perform better in interviews.

Sheffield Hallam University's employability agenda has resulted in a commitment to involve employers in course design and delivery.

The university works with more than 1,000 businesses to provide student work placements and offers over 25,000 placements every year. This gives Sheffield Hallam students unique experiences and the chance to make the contacts in industry that will help further career and employability skills.

Many of Sheffield Hallam's courses are accredited by professional associations and will help students to develop the skills which are in demand in the relevant industry or sector. By completing an accredited course, students may gain exemptions from professional examinations and graduate with a professional qualification or qualify quicker.

The Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey (DLHE) shows that 94% of Sheffield Hallam University undergraduates are in work or further study within six months of graduation.

On the vast majority of courses students will have the opportunity to take part in short and long term work placements, and on many undergraduate courses students can choose to spend up to a year working in industry on a paid placement.
