University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.
The University delivers bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate learning experience. With more than 120 programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, it is driven by visionary thinking, the most modern technology, internationally acclaimed faculty, and offerings necessary for students to achieve career success and make a difference in the Valley, the Americas, and the world.
The Office of Leadership and Mentoring encourages students to engage in transformative experiences that serve as the foundation of their leadership identity through the creation of tailored programs to maximize student success. Student Activities provides a unique experience that will enrich each UTRGV student’s university/college experience.
Chess has been an important part of the university and has acted as a metaphor of the vast human potential that the region holds. UTRGV Chess Team competes at the highest level at state, national and international tournaments, under the leadership of Chess Coach (Grandmaster) Bartek Macieja. The Chess Program organizes local and international tournaments, holds camps, trains area coaches, and presents community outreach chess classes for local community members on a regular basis, in particular through the Chess Academy. Finally, the UTRGV Chess Program supports the Chess Club at UTRGV, a student organization reaching over 100 chess enthusiasts.
UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island.
