Meeting new people

Friends and acquaintances can make your academic journey an enjoyable one, especially since being away from family and old friends is one of the toughest parts about studying overseas. After all, friendships formed abroad usually last even after you are back in your home country.

However, making new friends in a new country can be challenging. Try these tips to build relationships faster and easier.

1. Connect with fellow international students.

Other international students will most likely share mutual feelings and experiences. You can talk about topics that the locals might not be able to relate with, like culture shock and travelling. Sharing your feelings with someone who can understand is a great way to establish a connection.

2. Join clubs.

Whether you’re a freshman or a graduating student, getting involved in clubs is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and improve your skills in a specific area of interest. Joining clubs will also keep you busy and occupied, and in turn, will help create a more structured schedule to allow you to focus on key priorities and build your time management skills.

3. Look for Filipino organisations in the area.

There are tight-knit Filipino communities in almost all major cities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, and the USA. Once you connect with a Filipino group abroad, you’ll have an instant family and support system which can make your study abroad experience so much more fun.
